Marixx: Where Monaco, Italy, and America Meet—On a Plate
When Monaco roars with the thrill of the Grand Prix, and the sound of engines drowns out human voices, there’s a lesser-known extension of the principality—just 20 minutes away in Italy—where one can experience a true gastronomic climax.
This tiny country, with the world’s highest port density per capita, long ago ran out of physical space. So, a few years back (Monaco officially signed a 99-year lease with Italy in 2016), the principality secured a stretch of coastal land in Ventimiglia, the first Italian town across the border—only 12 km from Monte Carlo—and built a new port.
Thus emerged a fascinating Monegasque enclave on Italian soil—a place where two cultures blend seamlessly, framed by the Mediterranean. And nestled within this harbor, an American woman with exceptional taste launched Marixx, a refined seafood-focused restaurant that unites the culinary elegance of Italy with the finesse of Monaco.
Marixx is not just a restaurant; it’s a diplomatic table where continents meet. Today, I tasted pigeon—a dish revered in haute cuisine as a benchmark of a chef’s mastery. The best pigeon I’ve ever had was by Mauro Colagreco in Mirazur (Menton, World’s Best Restaurant in 2019), the second—at Chez Gerome in La Turbie (2 Michelin stars), and now Marixx claims a very respectable third. That’s no small compliment—it’s a sign of excellence.
The selection of ultra-fresh seafood is equally impressive. Pricing sits comfortably between Monaco and Italy—another pleasant surprise. The short drive through the Riviera becomes a culinary journey, ending with a glass of wine by the sea.
I wholeheartedly recommend this hidden gem to anyone living nearby who hasn’t discovered it yet. And for tourists, it’s a delightful detour—well worth the short escape.
Marixx is more than a restaurant. It’s a gastronomic intersection of Monaco, Italy, and America—where flavor speaks the universal language of pleasure. And yes, it truly deserves a star.

Read moreOk I'm just going to go ahead and say it. I bet there is plenty of people in this or on similar websites that don't. I almost didn't myself. I almost went ahead and started raving about just how amazing this restaurant I "randomly" bumped into was.
But I didn't and here it goes. As it turns out the chef is my brother.
So yes. I went to Marixx today with my girlfriend (we live overseas and were finally able to come over) and it is amazing, the whole experience of sitting there in front of the yacths just gently rolling along over the glassy waters of the harbour while you get poured the best wines this sunkissed part of Europe has to offer and you get served dishes that are not really food but sensorial experiences all it on themselves is....is sublime. I am just at al loss of words.
But you would expect me to be after all you don't get more bias as a reviewer as when you have to piece together some nice words for your bro's restaurant.
To put some value in this otherwise very very bias review I'm going to share with you what just going to Marixx and trying out some of Riccardo's dishes won't tell you.
I grew up with him. I travelled with him. Hell he even came and camped in my living room for two months back when I lived in Barcelona. And I can tell you without any shade of doubt that he has it. Whatever IT actually is that just makes you be able to throw stuff together (Anything! as I discovered back in the day on a dusty mexican street) and make it taste good, no, not just good but simply delicious he sure has it.
Maybe it is his genes (they surely skipped me then) or maybe it is that he was always close to our gramma, she was a magician in the kitchen (just like every other italian nana but better) or whatever it is I dont know but he has the Talent. And he has the means with all the best greens coming from the local Campagne and the freshest fish coming from the local Pescatori not to mention the amazing team that surrounds him.
He has the same talent that keeps you wondering for years if Martin is going to release a new book, the same talent that would have you absolutely overpay a courstside seat at Madison Square to see Curry shoot from the logo.
He has that and more. It is that good. But then again I am bias am I not? Hell just...
Read moreHigh end dining on the sea! Believe it or not we were a walk-in, no reservation we had decided 40 minutes before being seated. We went for the tasting menu and we opened with a very nice glass of champagne. The sommelier was very nice and recommended a bottle of Ligurian vermentino that we liked very much. The food was what you expect at a fine dining restaurant. The highlight was their dainty ‘button’ ravioli with pesto and fish that were literally an explosion of flavour in your mouth. We had a great night and we’re sure there’s scope to improve even further: the main dish can be made even more flavoursome adding some tweaks and so could be the hazelnut based dessert. Both were very good but could be made exceptional. We were a bit surprised to be charged for the final limoncello as it is customary to offer it in Italian restaurants especially after such a grandiose meal. No complaints on the flavour though it was amazing. I wholeheartedly recommended a visit to make your evening in Ventimiglia...
