The most unusual and satisfying dining experience I had on my Vicenza short break. No tourist menu here. This is a closely kept local secret. In fact on the street all you see is a door with a canopy with "Self-service restaurant" written on it. Walk around the back to the Piazza del Duomo and you see packed tables with happy diners tucking into their food. Self-service is a bit of a misnomer. Lunch is a choice of 3 mains dishes. Make your pick at the buffet counter and your plate is filled for you. Vegetables or salad come on a separate plate. Dessert is 4 cold dishes; tiramisu, chocolate mousse, and such like. Bread rolls are help yourself. The waiters check what's on your table and leave a running note with you. Wine and coffee are brought to you on request and the note is updated. When you leave take your note to the cash desk and your bill is calculated. And the great thing is it is about half what you expected! In the evening they revert to standard table service and with a wide choice of dishes and drinks. The food is simple and tasty and the clientele seem largely Italian and local. It is great value. If I lived here I would eat...
Read moreIt was a decent experience until we found a cockroach in one of our pasta. The waiter took it away and asked if he should replace it but we’ve lost our appetite. Everything okay so far until we wanted to pay. The boss told us that it was just an insect that flew onto our plate while eating. The waiter who literally saw the cooked Insect was denying that too. We had to discuss 10 minutes with the boss who didn’t spoke English to not pay that meal. I did not finish half my meal because I lost appetite and we still had to pay it. The waiter who spoke English wasn’t really translating the things we said and they’ve let it looked like we came up with a story to not pay our meal. Not only a disgusting but also a exhausting and embarrassing experience. It wasn’t a „fancy“ Restaurant and the Pasta was only 7 Euros but in my opinion it should be self evident that you don’t have to pay a meal you couldn’t enjoy. The subtle accusations were the cherry on...
Read moreI know many people love it, since it was recommended to me and my friends, but I personally didn't like it this much. It was very crowded with people and everyone was standing at the buffet. I felt like I had no time to translate the menu and decide what I actually wanted. So I just got Risotto with fish. The food was good, even tho it wasn't what I was originally looking for, I can recommend it. The place overall is very beautiful and nice to just have a chat with friends. Still, I wouldn't recommend it for tourists and people who don't speak Italian. Even tho the staff spoke German and English, the communication at the buffet was challenging. It was loud because of all the people and the cook didn't understand my question if it was made with milk. My vegetarian friend also got meat in his spaghetti even after ordering them without it. So no, I wouldn't...
