KANJYUKUYA is a charming traditional 19th-century farmhouse restaurant just steps from the Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum—and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The building itself is full of character, with rustic wooden beams and a cozy, authentic atmosphere that immediately transports you to another time.
We came here to try the local specialty, Hōtō, and it did not disappoint. Served piping hot in a large iron pot, it’s a hearty noodle stew packed with vegetables in a miso-based broth. Be warned—it’s a very generous portion! One order is easily enough for two people, so don’t make the same mistake as the couple next to us who each ordered one and looked genuinely overwhelmed when it arrived.
We also ordered the vegetable tempura, and I highly recommend it. The batter was light and crispy, and their homemade tempura dipping sauce took it to the next level—flavorful and perfectly balanced.
KANJYUKUYA offers an excellent introduction to local cuisine in a warm, welcoming setting. It’s a great place to relax after exploring the area, especially on a cooler day. Highly recommended for anyone wanting an authentic and filling meal near...

We really enjoyed our hōtō and tempura here! Also, they have 3 covered outdoor tables, so you can eat here with your pet dog. They sell some dog treats, too! Note, also, that the standard menu has a set meal with the noodles and tempura, but you can order just the noodles or just tempura if you're not super hungry. To be honest, it was a bit too much food, but I ate everything anyways because it was so good!
I ordered the chicken hōtō (thick flat udon noodles in a miso broth) which has pieces of skin-on chicken thigh, fried tofu skin, some big chunks of kabocha squash, shiitake mushroom, and green onion. The set came with several pieces of veggie tempura (1 kabocha squash, 1 carrot, 2 sweet potato, 1 shishito pepper). The tempura was nice and crispy while the inside vegetables were perfectly cooked through. Set price for hōtō and tempura is 1580yen to 1780yen (depending on your hōtō order: veg, chicken, pork)
Definitely recommend checking this place out, especially if you want to bring your furry friend or sit outside for...
Read moreHighly recommended. As vegetarian, it's always not easy to find a restaurant that has something traditional as well as meets (all or mostly) our diet requirements in Japan. Surprisingly this is one.
It was just at a right time to read a new review of this restaurant from a vegetarian customer when we are on the way to look for dinner.
Although this is not a vegetarian restaurant. The waiter can speak fair English, they understand our needs and suggest us their vegetable (vegetarian) Hoto and tempura rice box. Both are tasty, big portion, and with reasonable price. Extra thanks to them they even take out alliums for us! Their handmade chilli has fish so we didn't give it a try.
Adding to it, this restaurant locates close to the attractive spots, there's also a free parking on the opposite of the...
