If you are looking for vegan food in an authentically Japanese space, look no further. The Veggie Cafe at Sakura Saku is a restaurant space behind a small vegetable shop in a traditional-style houseshop like you might have found in Himeji 400 years ago. The view of Himeji Castle from the tatami where we were eating only adds to the vibe.
The food was well-presented, filling, and delicious. The vegan set consisted of a small salted salad, sesame rice balls, and assorted braised vegetables with lightly fried tofu served with roasted green tea. The tofu in particular was not quite like either silken tofu or firm tofu in the West, but somewhere in between. It had a lovely texture. The owner apologized that she does not stock/serve any vegan cakes (vegetarian only), but served coffee and seasonal fruit for dessert.
Everything is made to order, but the wait time is not long even when the restaurant is full. When the owner found out we were vegan vegetarian, she confirm in English that she would make our meal with no egg, no dashi, no meat, etc, and asked if we'd like it with or without soy sauce (i.e., gluten free). We had a lovely chat about her family, travels, and the New Year's holiday. Despite what other reviews have said, the owner's English is fine, twelve times better than my Japanese. She spoke more English than anyone at any of the restaurants we...
Read moreI want to recommend this cafe to you. Sakura suku is a japanese food cafe. There is a lunch menu and sweets menu. I recommend the lunch here. There's two types of lunch, you can chose meat or fish. The cafe's owner is a vegetable sommelier and her husband runs a vegetable shop. They cook delicious vegetables in the best way. Lunch includes soup, rice,a maindish,a sidedish, dessert and drinks,it is about 1.000yen. It's very reasonable and filling. I have seen foreign guests here before. So it may be easy to visit. there is a few bad points ① they have few options. But in other words ordering is easy. ② It's far from the station. But close to himeji castle. ③ Only cash.please make sure to brings...
Read moreLovely little spot!! They offer a vegetarian set meal for 1300 yen that is gluten-free and can be vegan if you get fruit instead of the chiffon cake. If you opt out of the dessert and post-meal drink entirely it’s only 1100 yen!
Nice assortment of vegetables and tofu prepared with care. The vegan main dish is a tofu patty with potato flour and okara (soybean meal) with lotus root. Not super flavourful but good with soy sauce I really liked the texture. Very nourishing ✨
Just be aware the service can be slower when they’re busy, it appeared to be only the couple who owns the place working despite the sakura season. The wife speaks a little bit of English! Thank you for the...
