Kyoto, 2023, Day 4, Ine, Restaurant Wadatsumi
Lesley send me a video on this restaurant about 125 Km drive from Kyoto, a fishing village, seaside area!
Originally didn’t realise that it would take 2 hours to get there, so early we left!
Advance booking was required and lucky we did! The Area/Restaurant specialises on Buri, (Japanese Amberjack, similar to Hamachi but larger) I booked the tasting menu in advance, the girls ordered a La Carte.
When you look at the picture of the sea, it’s so crystal clear you somehow know it’s fresher then fresh! The Sashimi was simply sublime, fresh, and full of the flavour of the sea! Something we simply never get as good in SG!
The Buri Shabu Shabu was nice, but the fish has the tendency to have quite a bite, recommend to only dip it shortly in the Boiling Stock, the Ponzu was perfect!
The Daikon braised with the Braised Buri was simply full of flavour! Amazing!
Miso-Buri grilled, great flavour but quite dry, sadly so!
The Buri Sushi was sensational! Perfect flavours right from the get go!
It goes without saying this was worth a trip! The environment, the pristine waters, quality of service! Par excellence!
Enjoy

Read moreThis is an excellent omakase. Fantastic fresh seafood and delicious! I Can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. I can't overemphasis what a fantastic experience we had here. The sushi was delicious and creative, the service was attentive. Inside the menu is a set menu that you can’t edit, you have to sit in and let the sushi chef do up each dish. Watching him prepare the dishes is half the fun honestly, and the eventual melt-in-your-mouth results are definitely something to write home about! This is a ‘must-try’ for anyone passionate for Japanese sushi or sashimi. Excellent range of fresh seafood prepared in various ways. Not particularly gourmet or high class but good quality and a super authentic local experience. The sushi is mind blowing, fresh, and surprisingly cheap. The sake is local and delicious. My wife, who detests shellfish, tried — and loved — abalone, crab, uni, Ikura, and more. We didn’t get much fish in our omakase order, but what we did get (maguro and salmon) was delicious. The prices are very reasonable. Highly recommended for the local factor. A real hidden gem in Ine area. Amazing food with friendly sushi masters. They speak minimal English so we had to use google translate...
Read moreWadatsumi is a temple praising fish, and the best example of Sea to Table I have ever seen. I ordered the Iomi course for 5,500 yen (branded the most popular) and it was honestly so much food I couldn't eat it all, from sushi, to grilled with salt, boiled fish in soy sauce, to fugu tempura, and even more. From the perspective of excellence in terms of fish preparation, this restaurant is easily 5-stars. The atmosphere in the evening, sitting at the counter while the chef prepares the fish to the background of the bay right in front of you, this is also easily 5-stars. My only hesitation in giving this restaurant a 5-star rating is the lack of diversity in the meal. Yes, the fish was amazing. It was prepared a variety of different ways, but there wasn't really anything else but fish. I would have liked to have some vegetables prepared with the fish, but that may just be me. I will also second what another reviewer said, this restaurant is not an option for vegan or vegetarian diners. In terms of cooking skill, ingredient quality (everything was locally caught and prepared), and atmosphere, this place is not only a great dining experience, but a great price for the amount of food....
