We missed Indian food while in Japan and stepped into this basement level restaurant after reading good reviews.
The place was homely and inviting, and looked clean and well kept. We settled on a Butter Chicken with Naan set and a Palak Paneer with Rice.
It was my first time tasting North Indian cuisine with Japanese rice. Although I asked for less rice, a gigantic serving was served. I much prefer having the basmati variety of rice with Indian food as it feels more fluffy, less cloying and goes easier with thick gravies. Japanese short grain rice is a little overwhelming and makes you feel full very quickly. You also won't be able to appreciate the nuances in the spice blend well. The palak paneer was nice, it came with big bouncy cubes of paneer underneath the thick gravy. I felt that the aesthetic can be improved if the palak was slightly more green, perhaps more spinach or even some mint could be used to enhance it. I was very glad that they had a spice level option for each item. I ordered the spiciest level and wicked chili oil was drizzled over the dish, giving it a good spicy kick to the gut.
The salad portion was a little small. The dressing tasted like thousand island mixed with mustard and it was nicer than the typical Japanese sesame dressing. However, if traditional raita could be served in place of salad, it would have given the whole meal a more authentic experience.
Next up was the Butter Chicken and Naan set. The Naan was humongous and good value for money. In Singapore where we come from, the naans are probably only 1/2 or 1/3 the size. The naan was baked very well, soft fluffy texture with big air pockets. The browned ends were fragrant and gave a nice crisp when pulled apart, heavenly! However, the dough was a little more to the sweet side and it tends to get a little difficult to eat towards the end when the butter chicken was sweet too. The Butter Chicken also leaned mostly towards the sweeter side and lacked the savoury onion-tomato-garlicky flavour we were used to in Singapore. The gravy was also quite watery instead of creamy.
Service was very prompt, and we were very glad to be able to finally be able to order in English in Japan! The wait staff checked on us attentively to refill our glasses with water. We were asked for feedback on the food and where we were from by (possibly) the owner. We shared that we were not a fan of sweet curries but we understand that it is necessary to cater to changing tastes in a country like Japan. We loved how open they were to hearing about Indian food in other countries and felt that they are genuinely passionate about bringing the taste of India to a wider audience.
Outstanding work on the restaurant and service! Apologies I could not give a 5 star rating due to my own taste preferences for non-sweet curries. Would love to visit and try something else the next time we are in Kobe! Namaste~
