At Kobe Sannomiya Station, there’s a Kobe beef restaurant called Red Rock. It opens at 11:30 AM, and we went right when it opened. We didn’t have to wait in line and used the automatic vending machine to order. We each ordered a Kobe beef bowl, and with drinks included, the total was less than 11,000 yen for 3 people. The food was served within ten minutes after we sat down. The dining space is a bit cramped, but since the goal is to enjoy the food, it didn’t bother us. I ordered a large portion of 黒毛ロースト丼大 (Large Black Hair Wagyu Roast Beef Bowl). When the dish arrived, the bowl wasn’t large, but it was packed to the brim, with the meat piled high and topped with a soft-boiled egg. I used chopsticks to break the egg, letting the yolk mix with the beef. The bowl was filled with thin slices of beef, which seemed to be rare, or even slightly less than rare. The first bite was astonishingly delicious—the beef was tender, allowing the fresh flavor of the ingredients to shine. The value for money here is excellent, and I was very satisfied with the taste of the food. Surprisingly, the food was enough for me, even though I’m a 220lb male. My girlfriend ordered the 黒毛サーロイン, which was...

It’s cheap, the service is fast, and you can’t get much better than the vibes underneath Kobe’s biggest train station. It’s a lot more authentic feeling than the newer Redrock chains, which can feel a bit sterile at times. The music, smoky atmosphere, and good drinks make this a must-stop for lunch or dinner.
Try the wagyu box if they have it, but any of the -don dishes will be remarkable and well worth your money.
Update: it’s been a little over two years since my initial review, and there have been some changes to the restaurant. They seem to have done a renewal on the restaurant interior, which I honestly feel removed some of the charm it originally had. The prices also changed to reflect that, and it’s a bit in the pricier end for the amount of food you receive. Beef is still...
Read moreVery disappointed with the large steak rice here. It looks better than it taste.I’ve been traveled to Japan so many times and try loads of food here, I was shocked by the beef here, half them it as tough as old thick cloth. I’ve been trying so hard to chew the beef , and some of unedible ones I put them in the tissue for start ,however it turned out half of the beef were so hard to eat, as you can see in the picture. If you expect some normal beef rice just for a quick lunch, this is the last restaurant i would recommend. You can get much better food somewhere else with that price in Kobe(more than 3400 just for this steak rice, definitely a trick for tourists). My husband ordered a cheese burger set, it was okay. I don’t know about other dishes, but I won’t go back again. I would say this is my worst meal in Japan so many...
