Three visits so far, and no doubt, this is one of my favorite places to eat in Kumamoto. I've been to the other taco/Mexican restaurant in Kumamoto, and both my wife and I agree, La Catrina wins. The other place isn't bad, but we prefer this place. The tortillas here are amazing. And despite only a single page menu we want to order everything on the page and everything is good.
The service is great. The chef and cooks are awesome. Japanese, English, Spanish, no problem.
Only two complaints. This place is small. You aren't going to be having work parties here. It fits about 14 people max. And that's max. Packed. And every time I've been they have been full. Best to make a reservation. My other complain is they do not always update their hours on Google. With the pandemic closing places was common. We would check Google, they would say special hours "open". We drive down there and there is a sign on the. Closed. That happened a couple times. I get it, you have to update Instagram and Facebook and tablelog. Still...
Read moreThis place is a nice little gem in Kumamoto if you like Mexican food. First and foremost, I grew up eating amazing Mexican food in Arizona. Home cooked and at amazing restaurants. So needless to say, I'm quite picky when it comes to Mexican food! Yet, La Catrina brought me back home! It's owned and operated by a Mexican guy who really puts a real and authentic feel to the menu. He's also a super friendly guy.
I enjoyed the beef tacos very much. I've seen some people complain about the portion size in their reviews, but if you've ever been to Mexico, it's around the same size portion wise but the quality of the meat, seasoning, soft corn tortillas are burting with flavor and authenticity. I would always choose quality over quantity... especially for Mexican food!
The guacamole was fresh and a perfect appetizer to get the taste buds ready!
If you want a taste of Mexico while you're Kumamoto, I highly...
Read moreOh Man, just what I needed a month in to living in Kumamoto. The steak taco, the cochinita pibil, and the Al pastor were standouts. The margarita was great and so was the ice cold draft. The quesadilla and tacos were excellent. Get the large quesadilla. The tacos were bigger than I expected, not sure why some have said they are small. Bigger than most I’ve had from taco trucks in California. Flavor was spot on, chorizo wasn’t as spice hot as I’m used to but their spicy salsa option made it oerfect. The pork and beef were seasoned just perfectly. I can’t wait to go back and try the molcajete. Mom and pop owners were very nice and I loved the laid back vibe. We went in a Thursday and had no trouble getting a table, it is small. There are parking lots nearby, only cost us about 200yen to park for 3 hrs in the evening (we took a a stroll after dinner, I ate a lot...
