I came right at opening from about 40 minutes away (20 minutes ish walk, 20 minutes ish bus). It was early in the morning and I like the sunrise (and sunset) but I’m sure if I had chosen to take the subway it would have been quicker. The baguette was a hit with the entire family. We had it on its own, buttered, with cheese, with ham, you name it. We tried both the plain and the sesame ones. The pain au chocolats were to die for, I got 3 but only managed to get a bite!! Everyone jumped on it and finished it so quickly they were gone by the time I put my coat up and got bits and bobs done after coming back with breakfast! The croissants were also fantastic. Substantive enough yet rich and buttery but not makes you throw up in your mouth buttery. Just right - warms your soul, takes you back to a fond childhood memory kind of buttery (in my defence, I spent a lot of my childhood in France). The financiers were great, everyone loved them, almondy, burnt buttery, cooked just right. The cheese and bacon bread was good and any other day I would have been so happy with it but after having the croissant and a bite of the pain au chocolat it’s like everything else pales in comparison. The potato bread is lovely, I think it’s sweet potato inside which i liked but some others may not. The ciabatta we froze and will reheat when we want it but it looks to die for too. The service was great, opened just in time, had a clerk with great English.
Edit: came back in spring 2025, I’m from Hong Kong so don’t live too far and LOVE Kyoto. Every bit as good as I remember it. I HIGHLY recommend coming when it opens especially if you live further as they run out of things, they rebake some a few hours later so if you’re close by and have time it’s fine but if not try to be one of the first in line. I came twice during my trip, the first time I managed to get everything I wanted, the second time I came about 40 minutes after opening and they were out of baguettes but I still loved having the ciabatta and pain au chocolat and financier. I do want to make a note because someone in the family did that the dough on the baguette is some of the best we’ve ever had hands down, textured and soft inside yet still nice and crispy on the outside while not being difficult to rip. I don’t bake myself so I can’t attest to it but some who do some amateur baking in the family said it’s like dough that’s been a worked by hand just enough. And there’s that freshly baked...
