GION NITI — Restaurant in Kyoto

My favorite restaurant in Kyoto. I’ve been coming to this place for the past decade and it is my first and last stop every time I arrive in kyoto. First off, there is no shaved ice. This restaurant / Bar serves up classic cocktails with the most amazing Italian food. Michito and Aoi (bar owners) and Kazuki (CDC) bring forth an amazing dining experience that represents Kyoto completely. You may wonder why Italian food in Kyoto, why not a traditional Kaiseki menu? That’s basically like saying if you go to San Francisco you should only eat clam chowder at pier 39. The whole experience is hard to quantify but below are my favorite selections. Please be mindful as this restaurant also entertains Geiko and Maiko and their clientele. Please refrain from photographs or gawking as this is a locals establishment and not a tourist hotspot.

Such a special hidden gem! This is a very refined locals spot frequented by geishas so act accordingly. Incredible Japanese whiskey selection with gorgeous ice blocks and a cherry blossom tree flowering in the indoor garden. The atmosphere is incredible and the small plates are delicious. I had the ajillio with local seafood and spring asparagus and the homemade gelato. The chef threw in some of the chocolates he made too, so lovely. Fantastic cocktails in a secluded bar with a tiny zen garden view inside. This is a proper place, with high end drinks and service.

We had 4 “seasonal drinks” (bartender decides what to serve you), all were great. Premium local produce -fruits, alcohol- and delicate craft. The place is very special.

Been here twice with a 12 year gap. Nothing...
