The worst meal and service I had in Japan.
First of all, you are "welcomed" by a very rude and curt older woman, who tells you you have to order and pay before even sitting down. All of that in a very unfriendly manner. I guess it is because if you first go up and sit down, other clients might warn you to try somewhere else. The woman upstairs was friendlier, but since you already ordered downstairs, she only brings you what you already ordered and you don't have any interaction with her.
Second, and most important: the food was the worse I had in Japan. Rice is sacred in Japan (both literally and figuratively). Cooking it until it's mushy and goopy is truly an insult to customers. Has the chef no self-respect? The chicken katsudon is supposed to have crispy chicken, but it was a bit soggy.
It feels like they are relying on their location because it's full of tourists. I really wonder whether the bowls are prepared in advance and reheated in...
Read moreWe were hungry and cold at 8:30 AM after seeing Kiyomizu-dera and recovering from the long flight to Japan the day before. Luckily for us this was one of the few in the area that was opened at the time. Importantly, my Japanese curry meal was delicious. My husband's was ok, hence the 4 stars. I think 1200 yen per meal in such a touristy area was very reasonable. Hot water and hot tea free as expected in most homey Asian establishment.
I was honestly surprised at some of the bad reviews. The rice was indeed mushy, which was consistent with what had.Luckily for me I liked it with the curry sauce. I never liked dry rice unless it's fried. There are different types of rice and different preparation styles. I believe they use sticky rice and prob didn't rinse the rice to death to remove all the starch.
I didn't mind the straight forward paying first before...
Read moreKyoyasaka in Kyoto is a straightforward dining spot with one standout feature—the view of the Hokan Ji Temple. The setting adds a unique dimension to a fairly typical meal. We tried the chicken katsu, which was good, meeting expectations without exceeding them.
While the food is satisfactory, the real appeal lies in the view. It offers a glimpse of Kyoto's historical ambiance, making the meal more enjoyable. The service was decent, with staff attending to basic needs without going above and beyond.
All in all, Kyoyasaka is worth a visit for those interested in combining a standard meal with a view that's anything...
