Mayday Coffee and Bar: Kyoto’s Hidden Gem
My local for the past 9 years I wanted to shout out (not too loudly as this is a hidden gem) about Mayday Coffee and Bar.
Nestled in the tranquil residential streets of Kitaoji, just north of Kyoto’s vibrant city centre, Mayday Coffee and Bar has been a beloved local fixture for over 11 years. This charming neighbourhood gathering spot channels the spirit of Boston’s Cheers, where “everybody knows your name,” creating a welcoming space that feels like a second home.
Founded by Satoshi Furukawa, the heart and soul of Mayday, the bar reflects his warmth, expertise, and passion for hospitality. Having honed his craft at the renowned Caamm Bar in downtown Kyoto and the iconic Mayday Club in Florence—after which the bar is named—Satoshi’s skill and charm elevate Mayday beyond a typical bar. It’s a community hub where each interaction feels personal, and every visit is like reconnecting with an old friend.
The atmosphere at Mayday is warm and inviting, with an 8-seater bar counter and intimate tables near the entrance. Soft lighting, cool music, and thoughtful décor create a relaxed, timeless charm that sets the perfect stage for unwinding. On special evenings, live bands add an extra layer of vibrancy, enhancing the experience alongside an impressive selection of cocktails, whiskey, and a playful menu.
Frequented by a diverse and tight-knit group of regulars, bespoke artisans, and curious wanderers, Mayday attracts a cross-section of personalities who share laughter, lively debates, and meaningful connections. It’s a place where strangers easily become friends, and where the sense of belonging transcends the typical bar experience.
When I first discovered Mayday, it was just a two-minute walk from my home. During the days I was opening one of Kyoto’s finest hotels, it quickly became my go-to retreat. Even now, after moving a few blocks south, it remains my home away from home—a classic yet friendly escape where great conversation and exceptional cocktails blend seamlessly with the authentic charm of Kyoto.
At Mayday, it’s not just about the drinks; it’s about the connections. The spirited banter with Satoshi behind the bar, the welcoming atmosphere, and the sense of community keep people coming back. Mayday is more than a bar—it’s a place where a simple night out transforms into an...
Read moreMy wife and i chose this local bar after a recommendation from our airbnb hostess. Short walk from our place, we enjoyed some food and drinks. We both loved the quietness of the atmosphere. They offered both cash and card payments as we are tourist however we happily paid cash. The bar tender was very nice and was informed by our hostess to expect us. ( most likely friends) we both wish we could have stayed longer and i wish we could have talked to the bar tenders for sometime however for the location its nicely decorated. No colorful lights just simple white lights and soft music so ideal for relaxing and talking over a beer or cocktail. Thank you to the owners for having us and giving us such and enjoyable date night.

Read moreLove it here. Very genuine owner and bartender. They have a matcha tiramisu cocktail that is delicious. Smoking is allowed inside but I didn't notice any smoke while I was there. Could just be great ventilation or because it wasn't as busy during the work week.
About 7-8 seats at the bar including a cozy couch at one end that you could fit a couple in and the rest are stools. There are 3-4 tables as well.
Its their 10 anniversary so stop in and get...
