I try not to overhype places, but I will say that the vegan grilled meat set was one of best meals I’ve eaten in my 40 years on this planet. Top 5, maybe even top 3.
I got the “cheese” spring roll, which was served with a dipping sauce that seemed to be comprised of vegan mayonnaise and perhaps homemade ketchup. The flavor was interesting - it was good, but different as I’m used to eating spring rolls with peanut sauce.
Everything about the vegan meat set was perfect. The soup and side vegetable served with the meal changes daily. The soup I had was a brothy chowder with corn, potatoes, and onion. This was probably the best soup I’ve ever eaten - it was perfectly balanced with savory flavor with mild sweetness from the corn, and a touch of pepper (not sure what kind). The soy meat was one of the best I’ve eaten, if not the best - perfect texture and flavor. The rice was cooked to perfection and the pickled squash was excellent.
The shop is run by a very friendly guy who has mastered his craft. Excellent service. The cafe is humble but has a nice interior. When you walk in there will be a world map to your right. He welcomes his customers from around the world to denote where they’re visiting Kyoto from.
This cafe was so good that I came back a second time during four days in Kyoto despite wanting to try all of the good vegan restaurants in the area. I got the vegan grilled meat set again, and also the gapaorice which was also very good. My friend who joined me the second time got the pho which he said was excellent.
I will definitely be returning here when I visit Kyoto again in the future. I highly recommend coming here. Support this...
Read moreIt’s hard to understand how this is acceptable standard of food? The Rice Gapao has no basil taste, just overpowering of sweetness on rice. The fried vermicelli with veggies is basically vermicelli with minimum of veggies, like a garnish. The green curry is simply sweet coconut sauce with rice. I’m sorry but I do not get this? I want to be kind, if you have low or no expectations and you simply haven’t developed a taste of good cooking. You may be ok but anyone with any developed sense of tastes and understand cooking, you will be well served to avoid this. My point is- vegan food does not need to be devoid of good ingredients...
Read moreOur vegan family of five had a great experience at this restaurant! We were easily seated around noon, most likely because of the very rainy weather. We ordered several dishes, and none of them disappointed. Some of our favorites included the nachos, taco rice, and grilled meat set. The flavor profile of the taco rice and nachos was not just your typical Mexican style but also included some Asian influences, which was enjoyable twist. The service was fast and attentive, even though there was only one person working. Overall, everyone left feeling full and very satisfied with...
