This restaurant is located within ryuanji “龍安寺“ temple specialising in “湯豆腐”. There are no other choices on the menu so you should come only if you wish to taste the Kyoto tofu. Overall, this is simply the best tofu dinning experience I ever had in my life. However, the premium set costs ¥3300 per pax which I think it is a bit expensive. But you can eat while enjoying some beautiful scenery next to the dinning area. Not an ideal place for recommendation if you do not like tofu so much.

This vegetarian JPY 3,800 lunch was filling and fairly good. If you had to pick one lunch to eat at a temple, I highly recommend having it at Tenryuji Shigetsu, where their lunch is more thoughtful as to variety and proportion. The tofu soup here is big enough for three people. Shigetsu offered a wet towel to clean your hands before eating and a fruit for dessert, something that is not done here at Saigen-in. The food at Shigetsu tastes better also.

I came here to discover the true essence of tofu. I still don't know what tofu tastes like, but I had a great experience. It was a perfect way to wait for the rain to stop. The setup and views are great, the yodofu portion are generous and the hall is decently heated. They indeed make you pay in cash right when they bring the nabe (not when ordering or when leaving), it feels weird, but they do that to everyone.

One of my favorite restaurants I ate at in Japan! Tatami mat floors, so you take off your shoes before entering and sit on cushions on the ground. Gorgeous restaurant that overlooks the gardens. Entirely plant-based, traditional Buddhist menu. Don’t be shy on the soy sauce for the tofu meal. Staff is kind and helpful at explaining how to eat the different foods. Unlimited green tea.

A little gem of paradise in the gardens at Ryōan-Ji. The food is simple but delicious. When I arrived I was one of only two westerners in sight and I felt, for the first time since my arrival in Japan, that this was the authentic experience I had been craving. I sat and watched the rain fall, enjoyed a good meal and soaked in the beauty of the garden beyond.

Bad service, not great food but a decent garden. I went here because it happened to be the easiest way for me to try yudofu. Never again, it was really nice to have the garden to eat by though. There is something iffy going on in their staff ranks methinks. It seems like everyone pays at receipt of food but that is a very... uncommon practice.
