Made a reservation here on google for Sakon for lunch time for a Monday. We got here just after it open and already it was filled with local Japanese. We were sat in the quiet room with a very unique decorative garden to face into. We ordered 3 sets of the lunch special, there’s white fish sashimi on rice, pieces of sashimi, one of them had a smoked duck which was umami. There’s chawanmushi, egg custard in each set and finished off with a matcha dessert. The restaurant definitely is upscale and the crowd it attracts is a sophisticated one. There’s roughly 30 seats but the menus are set food so the turnover is quick but not rushed. The waitresses speak very little English however all the menu had English on the, the location of this restaurant is very easy to find as it is close to a train station and once you finish a big meal. There’s a UNESCO park right across the street with amazing cherry blossom, such a quintessential Kyoto experience and without the tourist crowds. If you want to experience what a traditional Japanese restaurant is, Sakon offers this in spades. Highly recommended.

Sakon, located right in front of Ninnaji Niomon Gate, is a fantastic spot to enjoy an authentic kaiseki meal in Kyoto. The food was both interesting and delicious, offering a variety of beautifully presented dishes that showcased traditional Japanese flavors and seasonal ingredients. What made the experience even more memorable was the waiter, who was incredibly attentive, funny, and genuinely curious about our culture after we shared that we are from Romania. This personal touch added a unique charm to the meal and made us feel very welcomed. The restaurant’s serene location and the thoughtful presentation of the dishes make it an ideal place to explore the art of kaiseki dining. I highly recommend visiting Sakon for a delightful and authentic culinary experience in Kyoto!

Ordered Unagi (Eel) and it came beautifully and it tasted incredible. Run by two ladies whom seem to own the place, it’s very local and the prices are reasonable.
