Tsukiji-Nihonkai Nagano Station branch — Restaurant in Nagano

When I walked in, I wasn't greeted and I wasn't shown a seat. When I found one myself, it took quite a while until they brought me a oshibori. I was never offered complimentary water or tea until I requested it.

When I proceeded to order sushi from the chef, they called the waitress instead. Why am I sitting at a counter, if I can't order from the chef directly? Never had such an experience before!

The waiting staff here doesn't seem very experienced or capable. When I ordered nigiri sushi, the waitress had to find every single one on her device, painstakingly. And when I ordered something from the daily special's, she didn't even know about it. Also, every time I had to repeat how many of each I wanted twice. Note that I was ordering in Japanese, and I've never had any problems before.

The food, well, the tori no tatsuta age was quite good, the fish skewer wasn't. The sushi was alright, but nothing special. The sushi rice was a bit of a let down.

Their fish tank was literally empty. Never seen a sushi restaurant with an empty fish tank. Hopefully that's not the norm here - it was Sunday late evening when I was here, so maybe they don't get fresh fish that day.

What I quite liked here was the rather large selection of sake/nihonshu, including one of my favorites that I never saw in a restaurant before.

To my surprise, I got another oshibori towards the end of my stay. No other guest (Japanese or foreigner) got a second one. Neither those that were here longer than I nor the others. Still puzzled by that. Pretty sure that's the first time for any kind of restaurant, that I received two. Guess that's not bad, just very puzzling.

We decided to give this sushi shop opposite Nagano station a try but it was disappointing. Perhaps we were wrong to think that every sushi place in Japan can’t go wrong. The wait was long for the food, and the sushi was at best average. The shocking experience was the uni. The uni was single-handedly the worst we had on earth. It was not even fresh and extremely smelly (we had this on 9 Jan 2024 7pm, if you don’t have fresh uni you should not serve). We had better ones even in places that are less pricey. But all these were no fault of the service staff...

It was a good place sushi was expensive but I thought it was worth it best sushi iv had so far! At first we were not sure if we where welcomed their but at the end when we said good by we got such a warm respond it changed my whole mood about the place.
