Been to this place a few times, and the food is always first class.. You have a few grouchy staff, but you dismiss it. Anyone is entitled to an off day, even if this is a daily occurrence at this establishment.
This evening's experience is the worst. Definitely not going back. No food is worth this.
Service was atrocious. No, this is a complete and utter disgrace. DO NOT Visit if this is your first time to Japan or Nozawa Onsen. Japan is a wonderful place. A shame to judge Japan based on this place.
So, we went over in snowy conditions as we wanted the kids to try this place we have been telling them about it. It is cold and the 2 of my kids (10 and below) were having a hot chocolate - in freezing environment, who would begrudge them. When we were in the restaurants, they said no drinks from outside - that's fine, we respect the rules of the house, and we told the 2 kids to finish it outside in the cold. We told kids to rush through dinner so we could leave the place.
The kicker - when we were leaving they gave us the 2 cups and said no rubbish. So what do we do with the drinks? Leave them outside the restaurant when they were done? The logic is beyond me.
Anyway, if you want a good and reasonable meal, head over but be prepared to have a very...

I had the 大盛り焼き鳥丼 Large Yakitori donburi. It seems to be there most popular dish but the unagi also looks amazing.
Such amazing quality and preparation. The building and environment are...
Read moreAtarashiya is my favourite restaurant in Nozawa-onsen. Although their opening hours are short, it is worth going out of your way to climb the hill to get there. Atarashiya has an entire selection of affordable rice bowls that cater to each and everyone’s palette. I would recommend going there at around 4pm for a quieter meal and no queues, but expect a 30 minute wait if you go...
