I went to an eel restaurant called Hakkou in Kitashinchi with my friends, and honestly, it was insane.
The moment we stepped inside, we were surrounded by a warm, wooden, traditional Japanese atmosphere — calm and elegant.
We ordered the special premium eel, and when it arrived, our excitement went through the roof. Just looking at it, everyone said with a laugh, “That’s definitely gonna be amazing.”
Even the aroma was on another level — totally unfair. At that point, I already knew this meal was a winner.
The staff’s manners were so refined that I instantly thought, “This place is the real deal.” It felt like we got a little peek into the grown-up world.
The eel was thick, fluffy, and just melted in my mouth, releasing a wave of flavor that made me say out loud, “Wow, that’s delicious!”
Even the chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) had big chunks of eel inside — absolutely incredible. My friends went completely silent while eating — the “everyone’s in heaven” kind of silence.
This is the kind of place I’d want to recommend to my family. It’s definitely the number one in Kitashinchi — maybe even in all of Umeda.
I was honestly blown away that Kitashinchi has restaurants...

We were introduced to “Hakkou Kitashinchi” by a senior colleague and came here for a business dinner with three associates, excited to enjoy some exquisite dishes.
It’s an easy 10-minute walk from Umeda Station, located on a quiet side street — easy to find and surprisingly close. I thought, “Kitashinchi can be so calm and elegant!”
The staff noticed us right away and greeted us politely.
On the first floor, there’s a cozy wooden counter, warmly lit and peaceful. Beautiful Kutani porcelain chopstick rests decorate the table — a lovely touch of Japanese craftsmanship that foreign guests will definitely appreciate.
We were guided downstairs, passing a small stone path leading to a private room with dark wood and soft lighting. Traditional koto music played in the background, creating a serene atmosphere. Within a minute, I knew this place was special.
We started with a special Chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) — available only for reservations. Opening the lid released a wonderful aroma of dashi broth, and inside was a slice of eel. Rich yet delicate, smooth, and full of umami.
Next came Umaki (eel rolled omelet) and Shirayaki (grilled eel without sauce). The umaki was thick, fluffy, and comforting. The shirayaki had a light crispy surface with a soft, juicy texture — “This goes perfectly with wasabi!” Served with wasabi stems and Wakayama Budo Sansho pepper, every bite brought a new layer of flavor. I paired it with a Hakushu Highball, which matched beautifully.
The main dish, Special Unagi Don, was stunning. Perfectly grilled domestic eel glazed with secret sauce, laid over Kyoto Hachidaime Gihee premium rice. Each grain soaked up the sauce perfectly. The flavor balance — sweet, smoky, and rich — was just amazing. Even for women, the portion size is perfect.
The service was professional yet calm. Plates were cleared naturally, timing was perfect, and everything felt smooth and thoughtful. I couldn’t help but think, “Everything about this place is perfect.”
If you’re looking for authentic Japanese unagi in a calm, refined atmosphere, Hakkou Kitashinchi is ideal — for business dinners, anniversaries, or special evenings.
Highly recommended for both Japanese and international guests. I’ll definitely...
Read moreIt’s a short 9 min walk from Yodoyabashi Station M17 red line. Small cozy place with 8 seats with more private dining rooms available downstairs. We came for lunch on a Sunday and there was another couple. We ordered the 4000 yen special. You get a whole big fat succulent juicy grilled eel and it was very very delicious. The texture and taste were superb. Not too salty. They provide Sancho and extra sauce. But no wasabi. They gave complimentary chawanmushi and it was very smooth and silky. The hot tea was also complimentary. I would recommend ordering the hithumbashi as you still get 3/4 eel and there are more pickles and dashi soup to break the monotony of eating a lot of eel delicious...
