My husband & I were looking for some sushi for our last night in Shimoda. Our ryokan host recommended Mimatsu & called to make a reservation for us (& give them a heads up that we spoke little Japanese). The menu was easy to Google translate, and we had an incredible bi-lingual table neighbor who helped us order. The chefs made amazing sushi with fresh local fish, we could taste the ocean in the best way. This was a fantastic meal in a friendly place, and we hope to come back for another hyper local & well crafted meal again on our next adventure...
Read moreGreat little sushi place. Prices are decent and we were full after the meal. The produce was fresh and tastes great. The sushi master made an effort to explain the types of fish that we had on our plate using his book. Google translate helped with the menu, so I put the translated version on this review for your convenience. Definitely get the Wasabi as it adds a little kick to each bite (it's not much but enough to add to the flavour). Service was quick and efficient. Space is limited to about 16 seats so book ahead if it's a busy part...
Read moreDelicious small sushi shop, operated by a nice couple. I had a delicious set made from locally-caught fish, including Kinmedai, Shimoda’s speciality. 80% of Japan’s Kinmedai is caught in the waters of Shimoda.
There is no English menu, but the sushi menu is simple enough:
“Kurofune” is the set of local fish “Nigiri nami” is a standard Tokyo-style nigiri set “Nigiri jo” is an upgrade of the above “Nigiri tokujo” is the best version of the above
Sets are reasonable for the quality, around 1600-2800 yen each....
