Toranoya — Restaurant in Takayama

AVOID! There's a sign that says it closes at 21:00. Went there at 19:55 and as soon as I stepped in the lady shouted: "No! Closed! Sorry!" (There were 3 people eating...) It seemed strange but I simply said ok and left.

Today we tried again at 19:30 and the lady REALLY RUDELY said: "No! Closed!" This was definitely not normal as it supposedly closes at 21:00. I asked if it was ok to take it away. The lady was once again rude and reluctantly agreed to it. (I'd like to point out that 2 people went in right before me and she did not tell them: "Closed! Closed!"...)

I'm sadly going to say what it seemed: those 2 were Japanese, we aren't...

I honestly don't know if she simply doesn't like tourists or what's wrong but I definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND this restaurant (at least not to tourists or non Japanese people).

And last but not least: we ordered 2 okonomiyaki and she made a mistake and one wasn't the one we ordered. As we waited outside while she was cooking them we couldn't tell that she gave us the wrong one. Too bad...

Ate here back in April of 2025. Not sure what all the complaints about hygiene are referencing. I had no issues with this place whatsoever. I sat at the counter and the kind owner/chef talked me out of ordering two okonomiyaki thankfully, because they're much bigger/more filling than I expected.

Small and cozy restaurant with an authentic vibe and delicious okonomiyaki run by a friendly older lady. After we were unlucky to get in for dinner, we came back next day for lunch when it was less busy and she immediately welcomed us.
