We were waiting for a shop to open up, and being the coffee addict I am, I really needed my caffeine for the morning (who does not need a boost of energy for all the walking we were to do in Japan). I should mention its difficult to find a coffee shop that opens in the morning (most have openings at 1000h-1200h), but thankfully Ryumon has early hours!
I am absolutely in love with this cozy little coffee shop that has all the right elements: a small but intimate setting, great vibes, and an excellent staff. It's everything you could want in a coffee shop. During the warm months, grab a seat outside on the single bench (since the space is limited). Otherwise, seating inside is quite limited. If you're lucky enough to snag a spot upstairs, you'll have a great view of the bustling street below, and of course, more good vibes to soak up.
Oh, and of course, the coffee is good! We got the Hoji Cha Latte (★★★★★) and Cafe Latte (★★★★★). Both superb. Highly recommend if you are around the area :) (which you maybe, if you are going to the Ghibli Museum!)
Overall Kel rating: ★★★★★/5 The good: Opens at 0900h! Caffeine is great. The decent: Limited...
Read moreI was in Kichijoji looking around, this area is full of clothes/coffee/bric-a-brac shops and restaurants. What sealed the deal for me to walk the extra few hundred meters was the wifi password - cheese cake. Talk about a witty and smart password!
So I made the detour, was greeted politely and the barista/owner made a real effort to speak good English that I was embarrassed that I didn't speak more Japanese.
I love espresso tonics and the serve here didn't disappoint, the difference is that this one here is shaken and served instead of layered. But that made this serve smooth and you don't have the tonic bubbles poking holes in your palate. The honey and butter toast reminded me of my childhood toast adventures in Japanese cafes - hot, crispy, sweet and buttery.
People talked a lot about price, but I find that the quality justifies a higher price than Family Mart coffee and the barista and his assistant were very polite and accommodating. Service and quality product make all...

Located in a quiet residential area about 5-6 mins walk east from Kichijoji station, Ryumon Coffee Stand is a hugely popular cafe housed in a narrow 2-storey building. 🏠
With a stylish white colour scheme, great aesthetics, friendly service and of course solid coffee and food, it usually has several people waiting outside. 👥👥
There are 2 tables for two people on the 1st floor, and several tables/sofa seats on the 2nd floor. With more comfortable seats and more space, I recommend the 2nd floor space if available. ↗️
Before taking a seat, you order and pay at the cashier first. I went with the cheesecake set, which is a refreshing lemon-flavoured baked type. While it looks quite heavy, it is much lighter and more palatable than expected, moist, less acidic and gently sweet. 🤤
Served with whipped cream, raspberry sauce and rock salt, you can mix things up to create different harmony of flavours - whipped cream gives it a mild & creamy taste. Raspberry sauce gives it a refreshing aftertaste. With rock salt, the richness is enhanced. 😋
The coffee had a fruity punch which paired well with the sweet cheesecake. ☕️
After noticing that the majority of the customers were so-called "Instagram Girls" who were spending a lot of time in the toilet, I decided to investigate and discovered the reason - a VOGUE mirror where you can take snaps of yourself posing as a cover girl or boy! 🤳📸
While it has a chilled atmosphere, please note that working on laptops or studying is frowned upon, so please bear this in mind. 🙅🏻♂️
If you are prepared to wait, and don't mind the Insta-crowd, it's well worth a visit! 👌🏼
