AMENDED REVIEW: I have been a big fan of TreGatti but I need to add some further comments because of several problems on subsequent visits. The food is still excellent but management is making bad decisions that are pushing down the quality of the overall experience.
Don’t charge for water. The restaurant has now made a change where they won’t give you tapwater instead you need to get either pay for sparkling or still water. This is far outside the norm for Tokyo and makes the restaurant look cheap. That is especially the case because they charge an ¥800 cover charge.
Serve coffee. When we first started coming here, the staff would say the coffee machine was broken and therefore they couldn’t serve any. Now they have dropped any pretense of serving coffee. They just don’t make any. if the management wants to give the image of offering Italian cuisine, they need to serve coffee. No self-respecting restaurant owner in Italy would serve you a meal and then say they don’t have any coffee. That’s the easiest thing in the world to do. Plus it’s profitable. Then you won’t have to charge for water.
Offer vegetables. You can find tons of pasta and meat on the menu but very few vegetables. If you want to be like an Italian place, you should offer some vegetables.
Clean up the broken down chairs on the staircase. Maybe a couple years ago the old chairs would’ve been charming. But now they just look like garbage that someone left behind.
I am writing this with the best of intentions — in the hopes management will change. Again the food is excellent. The restaurant is doing the difficult things well but it’s doing the easy things poorly.
INITIAL REVIEW: Truly excellent Italian food from one of the country’s best regions. So many good dishes. The truffle lasagna is special. Bread is surprisingly good. Wines can get a little expensive but the house options are solid. I should have taken...
Read moreWent here already a couple of times because Tre Gatti has many authentic Italian dishes which are not easy to find in other Italian restaurants in Tokyo . The taste feels like when you are in Italy. Located very conveniently , 1 minute walking from Mejiro station . My recommended dishes are Tortellini in brodo , Spinach lasagna with beef and truffle ( this was very nice ) Tigelle ( round bread ) with Lard paste and special Bread (Coppia Ferrarese ) It has a cozy armosphere. There are some reasonable priced wines on the winelist but they have also expensive vintage wines. The only negative thing is that there is no coffee . For the rest really recommended, specially for Italians and people who has been in the Emilia Romagna region.
Last thing , this place is not always open so be sure to call them if you...
Read moreI am originally from Modena (Italy) I know very well the food of Osteria tre gatti since it's original from my area. The quality of primary resources is quite good but kind pricey if you consider that our regional cuisine has humble origins. I know cheese and cold cuts are quite expensive in Japan so I won't be too harsh with my judgement. The chef is kind and the service generally speaking was good. I suggest this to any Japanese or foreign person who wants to experiment with something different from pizza or pasta. Regarding food I have tried tortellini with heavy cream and gnocco fritto with cold cuts and...
