Rokujoan — Restaurant in Uji

Our favorite matcha ice cream in Uji, hands down.

We’ve tried matcha ice cream from at least four other places in Uji, and Rokujoan still comes out on top. Their matcha ice cream is the stickiest and most flavorful, with a rich depth you don’t always find elsewhere.

We also really love their crepe. It’s soft, lightly crispy on the edges, and pairs so well with the matcha.

The shop itself is a small, humble stall with cozy outdoor seating. It’s open-air and feels really relaxed, which makes the experience even better. There’s something about the quiet charm here that keeps pulling us back.

If you're a foreigner looking for somewhere to eat I strongly suggest looking elsewhere. My partner and I went upstairs for something to eat and when we tried to order one plate we were not allowed. When we attempted to explain that we simply were not very hungry and were only looking to share something, we were promptly kicked out.

I can understand this if there was a long line to get in and all the other tables were occupied, however, we were the only people in the entire restaurant. Terrible experience. Incredibly rude....

This place hosts dessert and snacks shop on a ground level as well as restaurant on a second floor. We tried both. Firstly, went to their soba noodle set, flavored with local tea. It was just so so, not much nutrition in it and almost no proteins in it, only very small piece of fish, rest was carbs. I would normally give such place 3 stars maximum. Snack shop was good though, so overall 4 stars. Ice cream and custard bun were very good indeed. There are few seats available in front to seat down and...
