The only place in Japan where we (me and the other 2 friends) has been discriminated. Call it bad service, but still it’s not normal. We were 3 European women coming for a short break during the day (hottest hours). Two of my friends bought cakes (individually packaged) and ice cream (each). And sat at the available small table. I was just going to order a tea set consisted of cakes and iced tea. When cashier approached my friends and said they have to leave because they bought only ice cream. I told cashier that going to order tea set. Cashier replied that i can stay but my friends have to go. I don’t understand how this business operates. We can’t eat on the street, we bought food the cafe was selling and after were kicked out. Discrimination at its purest form. I heard such stories from other travelers but never expected it will happen to me. I would suggest to...
Read moreMy standard has probably become pretty low since I’ve been living in Europe for more than 10 years and I don’t get to taste anything with hoji tea flavour in Europe 😅 so every time I get to have anything remotely related to the taste of hoji tea in Japan, I get really excited. As you can see in my photos, they do use the same hoji tea flavoured castella-like pound cake for different dishes but I don’t care, it tasted great. 😂 The place is small but cosy. Depending on the time, it may be full and you may have to queue up. The staff was not rude nor friendly, just doing her job, which is pretty typical in Germany but maybe not so...
Read moreNot worth going at all — don't waste your time!!! I came here especially for the Hojicha-tea experience, but the flavor was mediocre and the service was appalling. I waited more than 25 minutes without receiving my order, while four or five customers who arrived after me were already served. At first I politely asked the female staff member, who kept saying “okay, okay,” yet the next dishes that came out were still not mine. Furious, I confronted her—she just pretended not to hear. I finally had to get in her face and demand an apology. Uji itself is stunning, and places like Nakamura Tokichi and Itohkyuemon serve great-tasting food with genuinely friendly service—go to them instead. Whatever you do, skip this shop; you’ll only waste your...
