Yamasan Cafe — Restaurant in Uji

I came here with my family. This is a nice restaurant / store that serves delicious authentic Japanese food.

Waiting time: When I came, a waiter told me I would have to wait 30 minutes because the seats were full. I ended up only having to wait for 10 minutes and it was actually a nice experience because the store provided many goods to look at and some free samples of Matcha Chocolate.

Food: We tried two dishes, one was pork on some rice with scrambled egg strips. The other was a collection of small Japanese dishes including fish. Both came with some miso soup that had mushrooms (shimeji) and sweet potatoes. The options were limited but the food tasted great!

Atmosphere: The atmosphere may have been the best part of this restaurant! The restaurant’s interior was nice and coordinated. The music and lighting was very calm and made the atmosphere very enjoyable. (One other good thing, this store was not jam-packed with tourists like other stores)

Customer Service: The staff consisted of about 3-5 people who were very polite and enjoyed small talk. After we ordered, we were served tea for free. Later I found out that you could get unlimited refills of tea for free.

Company: According to an employee, this company originally was just a miso company but then started opening restaurants. Some miso is still on sale in the shop.

A lovely shop with lovely staff and atmosphere! Lunch menu runs from 11AM till 2PM, however it can become quite busy, particularly on weekends. It also serves sweets and matcha till 5:30PM, so it’s also perfect if you just need to take a break from a busy day! They have such a wonderful selection of Matcha Bowls, Matcha Whisks, and other products, such as chocolates, sweets, snacks, and miso pastes! They have 3 types of Matcha, which there are of course many more in Uji, however I love the family, local owned vibe of this shop, so this is not a problem for me ❤️ I didn’t get a photo, but they also have a wide selection of Japanese tea, which the staff are happy to make a sample for you! I wasn’t sure which tea to buy, so they let me try them! I was so happy, and everyone was super nice and friendly! It’s also so close to the station, so perfect if you are just heading in or out of Uji via JR Line

As we were planning our trip to Japan, we made a an adjustment before our departure to hit up Uji. When I saw matcha soba noodles were a thing, we prioritized a visit to a shop that offered them.

We passed many options and stopped here. I got the matcha soba with herring and my wife got matcha soba with fried tofu. They were incredible! Generally we don't like tofu, but this was perfectly sweet. I haven't had herring so I don't have a benchmark, but it was also pleasant in the sweet broth and green onions. It was a great experience and I would do it again.
