Arrived at 1.00pm just as a couple were leaving one of a half dozen tables outside the front of the pub; result! I sat; my wife checked in. “If you sit outside you’ll have to order at the bar”, she was told brusquely by the Maitre de. OK. Not a problem but maybe not the best COVID protocol. I went in. Just inside there were two staff (including the Maitre de) at a cash register. “I’d to order some drinks please”, I say. He says: “You’ll have to order at the bar.” I take two side steps to the right: he follows. We are at the bar. In the meantime a waitress has cleared the previous occupants’ empties; she doesn’t wipe the table. Never mind the COVID thing, I’m more concerned about the split beer dripping onto my trousers. I go back in and ask the Maitre de if he wouldn’t mind getting somebody to wipe down the table. He says he will. 10 minutes later we have finished our drinks. The table is still uncleaned. On the day‘s specials, We eye a rather nice sounding mackerel and Jersey Royal lunch. My wife goes in to order. Apparently, there is no mackerel; maybe there was a rush on the mackerel for brunch. She reminds the Maitre de that the table still needs to be wiped. This turns out to be something of an issue. “Yes, I’ve been busy” (good news surely, given the effect of the pandemic on trade?). “OK but we’ve been here for 25 minutes”. He says (again) “You can see I’m busy” (to be honest, he wasn’t really). “OK”, says my wife wondering why his 'busy-ness' was her problem, “if you give me a cloth, I’ll do it myself.” He sends somebody who wipes down the table badly and with even worse attitude. We leave. We had a very nice lunch at the Old Courthouse, attended by some professional, courteous and friendly young Polish people. I don’t have the name of the Maitre de at the Tenby. But just so you know who he is - dark-haired, blue-eyed, eastern European and about 5’8”. Don’t know if it is a management or staffing problem but it needs...
Read moreParking can be difficult but the location of the pub is perfect. A seat near the window provides a beautiful view across the quaint harbour. The staff were friendly and efficient. On first appearances the price of food on the menu is a little more expensive than similar hostelries but it is worth it for the quantity and quality of food offered. For example, the bowl of soup that I had as a starter was twice the size that I have had at previous pubs. I can honestly say that the BBQ spare ribs were the best that I have ever eaten whilst out. They were cooked to perfection and the sesame and coriander that adorned them gave a delicious flavour. My wife was more than impressed with her course of mussels. ‘The Tenby’ is well worth a visit and by leaving a little extra time to park further along the seafront where there are no restrictions will save time hunting for scarce spaces in one of the car...
Read moreI have never left a review in my life (I am 55) as I have never been inspired (nor have I taken any credence to the voracity of these forums), but I just had the worst meal of my life at the Tenby. Give it a miss folks. We ordered the Sunday roasts (beef and pork), and both were from a loaf (or some piece of said cut of meat that had been sitting in a bain marie, and was dry and in no way whatsoever “roasts”). My daughter ordered the rib eye……ha, she didn’t (couldn’t) eat it and gave it to me. It was the worst blade steak I have tasted. $53 AUD for that steak and $40 AUD for a “proper” Sunday roast. Be warned folks……absolute rip off. Give it a wide berth. No wonder it was very quiet on a Sunday night…..to think, we booked as we thought it was going to be busy. I have travelled the world for three decades and this...
