I recently visited Pizzeria Romana, and unfortunately, it was a thoroughly disappointing experience from start to finish.
Upon entering, I received no greeting, no smile—nothing that resembled a warm welcome. I took a seat and asked a few questions about the menu, which were answered by the waitress (possibly the owner) in a curt and uninterested manner, with no trace of hospitality or basic people skills. From the very beginning, I felt unwelcome and out of place.
When the pizza arrived, I was shocked by the portion size—it was so small it didn’t even cover the plate. There was barely any mozzarella, the toppings were minimal to the point of being negligible, and the base was hard and dry, more like a biscuit than a proper pizza. To be completely honest, even a supermarket pizza from Iceland offers better quality, taste, and value.
Once I’d finished eating, the waitress returned with a terse “All done?”—again, no warmth or effort to engage—and took the plate away without so much as a follow-up question about how the meal was. A simple smile or a friendly check-in would’ve gone a long way.
I decided not to risk ordering dessert and asked for the bill instead—£17.80 for the pizza. I’ve eaten pizza all over the UK and beyond, and I can say with confidence that this was the smallest, most overpriced, and least enjoyable pizza I’ve ever had.
With over 20 years of experience in hospitality myself, I fully understand how demanding the industry can be. However, being welcoming, friendly, and offering value for money are the absolute basics. Sadly, none of these fundamentals were present during my visit.
Feeling both unwelcome and overcharged is a terrible combination, and it left a truly bitter aftertaste—far worse than the...
Read moreIn our last day in St. Helier we wanted to get a takeway pizza to eat on the beach but wanted something authentic, rather than somewhere like Pizza Express so, thought we'd try here.
When we walked in there were a few people eating and were asked if we wanted a table for two but we said that we wanted a takeaway.
With hardly any dialogue, we were shown the menu, made our choice and the price was just presented to us on the card machine (much higher than on the menu - presumably the ever moving 'service charge') by a fierce looking lady without any conversation.
We then waited a short time whilst the pizza was made, and it was a genuinely 'hand made' pizza. It was then sliced, boxed and handed to us with fewer than a dozen words said to us during our whole visit.
The pizza was nice enough, but no better than a chain fresh pizza.
I always like to support local businesses but so I do sometimes feel there's no point as the gratitude for that support is not given. This was one of those times where it felt like we were more of an inconvenience than a...
Read moreHaving read the good reviews from way back as well as those from 3 and 4 week ago, we were expecting a little more than we experienced. The restaurant was quaint and had a good authentic feel about it and the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. The prawn cocktails were of good proportions, fresh, crispy and well presented. The pizzas seemed no more than ordinary really, nothing that would really jump out and say - 'What a great pizza', so on that front perhaps a bit dissapointed I guess. Still, it was ok and we still had them but we felt it didn't achieve the expectations of...
