Small two-story restaurant behind the gas station. This one is a hidden gem!
I have had the chance to eat some really good tonkotsu ramen in Tokyo, Japan and my hometown of San Francisco, California. The ramen here is on par with what I experienced in Tokyo and slightly better than what I have had in San Francisco.
We arrived early, before 11:00. The place was open but no customers yet. The staff was able to serve us a delicious meal at an early hour with all of the quality that I would expect during the lunch hour or dinner hour.
I ordered the Premium Tonkatsu and my friend ordered the Chicken Katsu with miso soup. Both orders came with a small side salad.
I am visiting from the States and have avoided uncooked veggies while here but that side salad was worth any risk. Super crunchy fresh veggies, oh how I've missed you!! The dressing was nice and light, the perfect amount.
The Tonkatsu arrived and besides the beautiful arrangement in the bowl, the first thing you notice is that delicious aroma. Now my stomach is grumbling, ready for an early lunch!
The broth is something you can only achieve with a very long cook time and great skill. This one is an example of what "Premium" should be! All the deliciousness the pork bones have to give have been extracted and placed in that bowl! Ramen noodles, a generous portion of pork belly, soft-boiled egg, fresh corn, baby bok choy, enoki mushrooms, green onions and nori. This bowl of ramen is as good as it could possibly get! Excellent!
I tried some of my friend's Chicken Katsu in a curry sauce. Also excellent, this is his favorite dish and I can see why. Very full of flavor, crispy crunchy chicken to soak up the curry sauce. A solid lunch!
I wish I was here longer to eat here again. I will just have to come back to...
Read moreIt was a last minute meeting that I had to organise and frankly I was stumped for a venue that was central and easy to be in. So I gave Shokudo a Japanese restaurant that Wangari runs a shot.
I couldn’t have made a better choice! I smelt the tantalising aroma from Shokudo from around the corner. The food smelt that good! Not only is Wangari a wonderful host (she comes around and spends time with you), Shokudo as a restaurant is an amazing venue. Centrally located in Kilimani on Lenana Road behind the Astrol Gas Station, Shokudo is a hidden gem of an authentic Japanese restaurant in Kenya. The best in Nairobi.
Our meeting was not only productive but also a HUGE success. Thank you Wangari and Shokudo. The ambience, the personal intimate setting, the amazing staff not only have my recommendation but you are my favourite place to...
Read moreI had the pork cutlets and pork ginger on two different occasions and it was amazing. I would personally recommend that you try it. The pork ginger was succulent and well seasoned. This was served with a bowl of white fluffy and sweet rice and a bowl of miso soup which was flavourful and tofu. The restaurant is ambient and conducive for either a fun family dinner or even a casual business meeting. In addition, the owners are very friendly and without being intrussive make you feel at home and welcome. Service also comes with a smile and the background smooth jazz makes you feel like you just might stay a bit longer to enjoy yourself. I would, however, like to know if they have happy hour on cocktails. Thank you Shokudo for the amazing service and delicious food that gives a one of a kind restaurant...
