In the Year of Our Lord, not long past, we didst stumble upon a place most wondrous in the heart of olde Riga — a sanctum of sugared sorcery known by the name Black Magic. Beneath its timbered beams and candle-lit corners, we partook of desserts so divine, they did seem crafted by alchemists or conjured by gentle witches steeped in the arcane arts of flavor.
Verily, when our lips first met the velvet sweetness of their dark confections — rich as a merchant’s purse, and spiced with whispers of forgotten lands — our mortal souls were stirred. We didst gaze upon one another, goblets of hot elixir in hand, and knew that life henceforth would be split in twain: before Black Magic, and after.
Each morsel did melt like a benediction, each cake a revelation. The very air within that hallowed hall was thick with cocoa, cinnamon, and mystery. The walls bore silent witness to our delight, as if smiling in secret, knowing the spell had taken hold.
Now, like cursed knights doomed to seek the Holy Grail, we roam distant realms and bustling towns, ever yearning, ever tasting — yet naught compares. Nay, no patisserie, no sweetmeat nor tart, has dared match the enchantment we once found in that fabled den.
O Black Magic, thou hast bewitched us body and spirit. Our days are now haunted by dreams of thy truffles and thy shadow-kissed pastries. Would that we could return, barefoot in snow or beneath summer's bloom, to that place where dessert did taste like memory and magic.
Until then, we remain but hungry pilgrims, bound to wander and...
Read moreWe had a very disappointing experience here. The waitress accidentally spilt all of my mother's hot blackberry drink over my mum's lap. She apologised profusely and ran to grab some napkins to mop it up. We reacted very calmly and even helped her clean it up, reassuring her it was ok, even though my mum's right leg and bottom half of her top were soaked and stained.
It was an honest mistake and she brought a fresh glass of the drink to my mum. However, what really shocked and disappointed us was the fact that about ten minutes before the bar was due to shut she brought round everyone's bills (our included) telling us they were shutting now and she charged us the full price of what we ordered including the drink she spilt!
We're not the type of people who typically complain about service but we thought since the spilt drink wasn't our fault and it was a cold night on which we were walking back to our accommodation, we thought they would at least discount my mum's drink from the bill.
I would have challenged this at the time but the way she brought the bill to everyone at once, it felt very rushed and pressured and like I said we don't usually complain so it felt very awkward. I was really excited to come to this bar based on it's reviews, photos and connection to the Black Balsam history. But other than the atmosphere and amazing decor (which I rate 10/10) our experience was really let down by this treatment. We're used to much better service when things like this to wrong. So really, what I hope is that they learn...
Read moreThe most terrible service and staff I have ever seen. I went there around 12:00, so when it is almost empty other than people buying chocolate to go. I sat down, waiting to get served and have a menu, while at least 3 waitresses walked pass me not saying or doing anything, just walking around and going to the back and coming back. After waiting a long time I went to the cash stand and got myself a menu, and the cashier said “I should just sit and they will come to me”. After I ordered it also took quite some time for them to cut a piece of cake and put it on a plate and serve. The cake was not fresh at all. When I went to pay I gave paper money and then wanted to give coins so that I get back mostly paper money and not hundred of little coins. The waitress just stared at the coin not saying or doing anything and just kept doing what she wanted and shrugged her shoulders. So this place doesn’t worth spending money at all, I think it gets so high rated because of the setting, but for that you can also just...
