The church was built near the River Daugava in 1211 by Livonian Bishop Albert of Riga, who came from Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany. It is considered the largest medieval church in the Baltic states. It has undergone many modifications in the course of its history. David Caspari was rector of the cathedral school in the late 17th century. His son Georg Caspari also served at the cathedral. Following a 1923 referendum the Lutheran Church had been forced to share the cathedral with the Roman Catholic Church,[1] but this was reversed in the 1931 Latvian Riga Cathedral referendum, returning it to the Lutheran Church. Religious services were prohibited during the Soviet occupation from 1939 to 1989, and the cathedral was used as a concert hall. The Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation was located in the southern wing of the cathedral. The cathedral was reopened for religious services in 1991, and is used by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia. In 2011 the copper roofing above the nave was replaced. In 2015 the tower exterior was also re-plated and its wooden support structure renewed.

Plaza Dome, located in Riga’s Dome Square, is a significant historical site, offering a glimpse into the city’s architectural heritage. The square, originally developed in the 19th century, surrounds key landmarks like the Riga Dome Cathedral, and has played an essential role in the cultural and political life of Latvia. The Dome Square area, featuring eclectic and baroque architectural styles, is considered the heart of Old Town Riga . Nearby, the Riga Plaza shopping center is known for offering a variety of stores, restaurants, and entertainment options, including popular dining choices like O’Learys and Green Burger .

Dome Square in Riga is a wonderful blend of history and modern life. Surrounded by impressive architectural landmarks, including the majestic Riga Cathedral, the square is a hub of activity. I loved strolling around, taking in the sights, and enjoying the lively atmosphere. The outdoor cafes are perfect for people-watching and relaxing. The square often hosts local events and markets, adding to its charm. It's a fantastic spot to experience the heart of Riga. Definitely worth a visit!

Was restored by the project of my grand grand father Edgars Slaviets, that's basically the center of the city center. Domu Cathedral has amazing chorus concerts, the House of Stock Exchange is really impressive and it houses an art gallery. En face is Latvian Radio (still broadcasting from there. Normally it has a beer garden and live music, but since our government killed all small restauration businesses during Covid and no policies have been taken to revive the old city, so you may be a but dissapointed in that regard, but don't loos your mood. There normally should be a Latvian Balzam liquor store and if it so happens that you are a day drinker and it's before 20:00 in the evening (official time until which you can buy alcohol legally and also official time when illegal, overcharged and contraband alchol sales now start. So we made it more fair for every one so that bootlegers, contrabandists and police is not left out. Also taxes on alchol have been raised in order to keep Finnish tourists from stacking up at Latvian stores before going back, our institutions see a bigger benefit to our people if they stock up in Estonia and do not come to Riga at all."

Nice place, recomend 💪 after that take a coctail and Grand Palace and...
