Visited April 2017. Mayrig sets a reference point for Armenian cuisine. The kitchen works with freshness and balance, and what comes out feels proud and assured.
Lahme Beajine - small bread discs topped with spicy marinated minced meat. Rounds of real flavour, the tomato–paprika marinade carrying a subtle nuttiness from sesame seeds. The Armenian herb salad was a revelation: whole thyme leaves in a carefully balanced dressing lifting the mix of onion, tomato, and herbs into something extraordinary.
The Mayrig Selection offered three kinds of kebbe: potato (keufteh), lentil (vosbov keufteh), and raw Armenian-style (ichi keufteh). Each was light, clean, and fresh, though easily unbalanced by dips. Crisp lavash added the texture they needed, though it didn’t appear to be made in-house. Hommos basterma (hummus topped with smoked beef), madzounov dolma (stuffed aubergine with yogurt), and tap top (grilled kebbe with walnuts and red pepper) all followed in quick order.
Then mante - lamb in pasta shells - dressed at the table with butter–paprika sauce, yogurt, and sumac. Fishnak keufteh was a highlight: kebbe with sour cherry coulis in yogurt, the sharp fruit a sublime match. Sou beureg (cheese-layered filo), gdzou patates (spiced fried potatoes), and finally ashtalieh - a pistachio-topped cream mousse scented with rosewater - brought the meal to a close.
From herbs to yogurt to seasoning, every plate showed care. Mayrig cooks with aplomb - heartfelt, fresh, and unmistakably Armenian. If you're only dining out once in Beirut,...

Read moreGiven the Armenian influence and sizable population in Lebanon, I was excited to try Mayrig, having heard several good reviews of the restaurant. As such, following a visit to the Arz in Barouk, my family and I decided to stop by on our way back from the mountains.
Visiting a few days after the New Year, the restaurant was busy, and had an inviting ambience. The building itself is beautiful, with stone walls and ornate designs on the floor. Nonetheless, we decided to sit outside, surrounded by an array of plants, and ordered a variety of recommended items.
The food itself varies slightly from typical Lebanese, with a noticeable affinity for sweetness through pomegranate molasses and cherries. The food arrived in waves, with an initial tableside spread of salads and dips, before we moved on to a series of main courses.
Most of the dishes were good, but short of excellent, although I was especially a fan of a yoghurt and kebab combination, a sour cherry kebab and a manti dish that was assembled tableside. The salads were slightly disappointing, and in some cases the dishes were slightly too sweet for my personal taste.
Overall, Mayrig provides an interesting experience with Armenian food. There were definitely some good dishes, and I enjoyed the atmosphere, but I left with my initial expectations not...
