Disclaimer: I'm writing this review as someone who has been to their establishment multiple times since I was a child. I've consistently recommended this place to others who visit Penang, but I won't be doing that anymore.
I called their place to clarify if we could bring a small dog along. The person on the other side of the line said yes. To make sure, I asked him multiple times to make sure that it was the case, and he just said yes.
When we arrived, they told us that the place was not, in fact, pet-friendly. This was fine by me. BUT the way the waiter who said this was extremely rude. "Who told you?" he literally said to my face in a mocking tone when I clarified that I had called earlier and asked about bringing a dog. The owner's attitude was dismissal as well, as though it was normal for his waiters to be rude to customers.
Overall behaviour was disgusting coming from a place I've known for over 20 years. I don't expect a 5-star service. I was fine with the place not being pet-friendly. But I do expect basic human politeness and the decency to not raise your voice at a customer who, in the beginning, asked you nicely about seating arrangements. Unless they fix their attitude I'm never returning to this...
Read moreIngolf Kneipe German Restaurant and Bar is one of those places I’ve often heard about, so I decided to give it a try. My first visit was a little disappointing because I initially came for their famous German pork knuckle, but unfortunately it was already sold out by the time I arrived around 8pm. Instead, I opted for the mixed grilled set, which came with chicken sausage, grilled pork, chicken, and lamb, served alongside salad and mushroom sauce. The chicken turned out to be on the dry side, while the sausage was flavorful and enjoyable. The pork, though cooked through, lacked tenderness. The mushroom sauce, while thick and tasty, had flour clumps and wasn’t served warm, which really took away from the experience.
I also tried the pork sausage dish, which came with sauerkraut, salad, and mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, it felt rushed—sausages were not crisp on the outside, the sauce wasn’t warm, and the overall dish came across as mediocre. For a place that specializes in hearty German food, I expected better consistency. That said, I’m still intrigued by their pork knuckle, which many people rave about, and I’ll likely return again just to give it a...
Read moreStepping into this restaurant feels like stepping into a warm, rustic home somewhere in the heart of Germany. The moment you walk through the door, you’re greeted with soft lighting, wooden accents, and a comforting aroma that instantly makes you feel at ease. There’s a certain nostalgic charm here — the kind that makes you slow down, take in your surroundings, and just enjoy the moment.
The food is absolutely delicious and clearly made with care. Every bite tastes authentic, from the hearty mains to the little touches in the sides and sauces. It’s the kind of cooking that warms you from the inside out, the way comfort food should. The service is friendly and attentive without ever feeling rushed, which really adds to the cozy atmosphere.
For the quality, authenticity, and overall experience you get, it’s totally worth it for the price. Whether you’re coming for a quiet meal, celebrating with friends, or just craving a taste of traditional German comfort food, this place is a gem. It’s rare to find somewhere that gets both the food and the feeling just right — but this restaurant does exactly that. I’ll definitely be coming back again...
