Overall: ⭐⭐⭐ (Average) Mixed experience with standout location/ambiance but inconsistent food quality. Worth a revisit primarily for the view/convenience.
Highlights: Location & Ambiance: ★★★★★ Prime spot overlooking Singapore, just 3 mins from CIQ. Ideal for travelers or those seeking a scenic dining view. Value: ★★★★☆ No GST or Service Charge – significant cost savings. Service: ★★★☆☆ Proactive offer to top up steamboat soup (polite, even if declined). Potential: ★★★☆☆ Willingness to try Asam fish next time indicates some dishes (like steamboat) show promise.
Dishes Reviewed: Yam Fish Head Steamboat (2-pax): ★★★★☆ The only acceptable/standout dish. Good enough to be the meal's saving grace. Homemade Prawn Ball: ★★☆☆☆ Taste met expectations, but lacked appetizing fried color (too pale). Signature Fish Cake: ★★☆☆☆ Tasted "quite normal" – nothing memorable. Fish Slice Abalone Seafood w/ Dry Kway Teow: ★☆☆☆☆ Major letdown: Fish not fresh, soup overpowered by ginger, overall "not very nice". Nasi Lemak: ★★☆☆☆ (Implied) No specific comments, but lack of praise suggests it was average/unremarkable.
Key Downsides: Freshness Issue: Fish in the soup dish was notably not fresh – a critical flaw for a seafood-focused restaurant. Inconsistent Execution: Dishes ranged from acceptable (steamboat, prawn ball taste) to poor (fish slice soup) to bland (fish cake). Execution lacks reliability. Visual Appeal: Prawn balls looked under-fried/pale, reducing appeal.
Verdict: "Might give it a second try for the location and ambience, might try their Asam fish next time." This sums it up well. The stunning view, CIQ proximity, and no GST/service charge are strong draws. However, food quality (especially freshness) needs improvement. Return only for the location/view, and focus on their specialty steamboats or the Asam fish – avoid the fish slice soup.
Recommendation: Go for: The view, convenience to CIQ, steamboat (especially yam fish head), and cost structure (no extra charges). Avoid: Fish slice soup and likely other non-specialty fish dishes based on freshness concern. Next Visit: Prioritize the Asam fish and stick to steamboat options. Manage expectations on food execution outside their core...
Read moreIf you’re in JB and craving seafood, Old Fisherman 老渔夫 is a gem that has truly stood the test of time. We had a feast and amazed by both the quality and variety.
The highlight was definitely the Fish Head Pot the broth was rich, flavourful, and the fish so tender it melted in the mouth. The spread also included Tom Yum Seafood Soup, Signature Laksa, Fish Cakes, Prawn Rolls, Chicken Skewers, White Snapper Assam Steamed Fish, Handmade Fishball Soup, and even Shark Fin Soup. Every dish was cooked with care and tasted fresh.
To top it off, dessert was refreshing Longan Ai-Yu Jelly and Chendol, the perfect sweet ending.
Service was warm, portions were generous, and the price was incredibly wallet-friendly for the amount of food we got. Definitely worth the visit if you’re ever in Stulang, Johor Bahru....
Read moreA casual spot with a solid selection of fresh seafood dishes on the menu. Overall, not bad—though a bit of a mixed bag.
The seafood porridge was definitely a hit. Simple, clean, and packed with flavour. Comfort food done right.
On the flip side, the fish head with yam hotpot missed the mark slightly. The yam was sliced too thin, which clouded up the soup more than expected. Also, I’m fairly certain what I got was fish collar instead of fish head. Flavour-wise, it was still decent, but the sweetness of the yam dominated the broth. A bit of acidity from salted veg or tomato would’ve really helped to balance things out.
Still, the place shows promise. Will probably give...
