8-9 dishes averaging 1 dish per pax (that's actually quite a good gauge, 6 dishes for 6 pax, 4 dishes for 4 pax etc)
Started off with their signature pancake bee hoon and sambal chilli - 2 big plates for 9 pax
Then it was 5-spice meat roll that really packed a punch of wholesome goodness.
The fish slices cooked in Malaysia's unique "kam heong" or golden fragrance stir fry style was a sure winner with an ideal mix of aromatic curry leaves and powder, dried shrimp, and savory bean paste.
Next, we had prawn paste chicken, a dish we spotted almost on every other table in the restaurant that night.
Deep fried pork was yet another star dish. Fried to a golden crisp, the sizzling hot oil did little to diminish its full flavour and tasty marinade.
The "petai" and sambal anchovies with a generous splatter of onions was yet another familiar family favourite.
Salted fish and stewed pork belly served in clay pot was a pleasantly heartwarming dish. My dad spotted it on their signature signboard - good ol' number 13. We ordered the smallest portion just to try but it left such an indelible impression and great aftertaste.
To be honest, the steam fish with a generous sprinkling of preserved radish or "chai poh" was nothing to shout about but the freshness of the fish more than made up for it.
I must say that the signature tofu was a hit with both adults and children. Crispy on the outside, creamy in the inside - a must try.
Rounding up the evening with traditional yam paste was a dream. Gingko nuts, steamed pumpkin, and fragrant onion oil all mixed in with fluffy, yummy yam paste completed the whole dining experience.
The final bill came up to less than RM300.
We'll definitely be back...
Read more[JB, MALAYSIA] A popular zichar restaurant, Restoran Ah Meng is popular among Singaporeans and Malaysians alike, and we tried so many great dishes that were worth coming back for 😍
Their signature San Lou Bee Hoon (RM20 for medium) is what they are famous for. With a slight wok hei, this bee hoon is deliciously flavourful 😍 I don't usually like bee hoon but this is lovely. I definitely can eat a big bowl of this!
For meats, the Fermented Beancurd Fried Pork (RM30 for medium) is another good option. The pork cutlets were freshly fried and the batter was so light and crispy. The meat was very flavourful with the fermented beancurd flavour (might be too intense for some) and succulent. Absolutely addictive with the Thai Chilli sauce!
For seafood, their Salted Egg Prawn (RM48 for medium) was the crowd favourite. The prawns were quite sizeable and so fresh and snappy 😍 the salted egg sauce might seem little, but it was very rich and buttery. This is very worth licking off the shells for!
Another must get item is their Signature Beancurd (RM20 for medium) as they might seem plain, but the texture was absolutely stunning. With a light batter, it had a slight crunch, revealing egg tofu and minced meat within. Pair them with their mayo and you got a good appetiser!
All dishes were hits and we can't wait to be...
