A cozy cafe situated a little away from the town center. It is on the roadside and can not be missed. Has a non pompous entrance. The food is good. They have value set lunch meals less than RM20. But the ala carté dishes are good as well, and can costs more than RM20 per pax. I tried the Muar Otak Fried Rice with Fujian Smokey Red tea. This was giving a vibe of homemade food. It tasted great, too. The service was great. Loved it. Very hospitable and courteous. Efficient as well. The ambience was tastefully decorated and well spaced and aerated. The music played was nice as well. Liked the place. The seats were ordinary chairs, but the color combination gave a boost to the image. The order and payment are to be made first at the counter. I tried their coconut latte and burnt cheesecake, and both were outstanding. The coconut latte was a unique twist on a classic—it was smooth, aromatic, and had a subtle coconut flavor that elevated the whole experience. Truly one of the best lattes I’ve ever had! The burnt cheesecake was pure indulgence—rich, creamy, and perfectly caramelized on top.
The service was impeccable, with friendly staff who made the visit even more enjoyable. This cafe strikes the perfect balance between great food, amazing drinks, and a relaxed atmosphere.
Highly recommend Cafe 1988 to anyone in Muar! Can’t wait to come back for more.

Read moreLoving this little accidental find! It's just across the road from Cocoville (椰树下) where I had my dinner. Saw online that they have a molten choc cake so came here for that originally. But then I saw they have genmaicha stuff so of course I had to try those instead. No regrets - both the genmaicha panna cotta and the genmaicha drink were delicious. I've never had iced genmai-milk-cha before but now I think I may be hooked! ^^
The ambience is relaxed (as the sign proclaims). BGM is pleasant and not too loud. The wait staff are all young and friendly. Aircon is freezing though so bring a sweater or order the hot genmaicha. Location seems to be a weird little residential nook by the roadside … a bit strange for a modern, Japan-themed/inspired cafe, but it's certainly worth a small detour if you are already...
