My wife and I visited this Otak-otak place in Muar for the second time, and we couldn't resist the urge to come back again.
The Otak-otak here is a must-try. We love how fresh it tastes, especially the traditional version that is wrapped in coconut leaf and freshly smoked when we purchased some. Although the ones in plastic packaging are also good, we prefer the traditional one.
We purchased some Otak-otak in soft white buns (bao) and the ones wrapped in both plastic and coconut leaf. They were all frozen and nicely packed, which ensured that they remained fresh during our 2.5-hour drive back to KL.
The staff at the counter were very friendly and provided us with detailed information about their products. Their kind service made our experience even more enjoyable.
Overall, we highly recommend this Otak-otak place to anyone visiting Muar. We will definitely come back if we have the chance to revisit this charming town...
Read moreI tried otak-otak from a few stalls, but this shop’s version is the tastiest for me. Compared to others, theirs has a nice tangy lime flavor, a bit more spice, and a bit more spicy.
You can tell from the shop’s look and packaging that it’s geared toward tourists. I went around 10 a.m., not too crowded yet, but it already felt busy, so I grabbed my order and left quickly.
I’d suggest the shop can improve their buying process to make it easier for customers and staff, like having one spot for payments and another spot for packing (instead of using a square table where all sides are for packing and paying, which gets messy). Also, keep the ice bags at the packing area so customers don’t keep asking then staff have to grab them from another spot. They could also put menu photos and FAQs higher up on the walls so people can see them from a distance.
If you want unique otak-otak, I totally...
Read moreI must admit that the thought of a sliver of otah wrapped in a leaf bun did not seem appealing to me. After all, the leaf buns are normally used to wrap braised pork.
But after steaming for 15 mins, one bite and you are hooked. These leaf buns are a little sweeter than the normal ones and the spiciness of the otah is balanced by the surprisingly soft and fluffy dough. The otah itself was sufficiently umami and fishy, with the spiciness not overwhelming the taste of fish.
Each packet only had 5 or 6. Should have bought more!
Also bought the normal fish, prawn and sotong otah. They were really scrumptious!
For this alone, another trip to Muar will...
