There are many versions of Nasi Lemak Royale in Alor Setar, and this one says "since 1967". I went there with my friends and checked with the staff who claimed this is the original. The rice was cold and the food was pathetic and tasteless, gravy was sweet, not much variety. I had sotong and chicken, which tasted totally flat, and the meat had no taste at all. All of my friends were equally disappointed with the quality and taste of the food. No wonder there were not many people at the queue. Regret our visit, will mark this place in my map to NEVER go there again. The actual name is "Restoran Nasi Lemak Royale Hijau Kuning". There are 2 outlets, one is a corner shoplot at Wisma Hijau Kuning, and the other one along the same stretch a few hundred metres away (after the petrol station) located on an open lot. I was charged RM8 for a plate of Nasi Lemak which consists of only a piece of fried chicken and a side of veggies, which is expensive considering similar establishment in city area charges around the same price point.
The fried chicken was as hard as a rock and tasteless. The rice tasted unremarkable, a surprise considering this place has received good reviews. The vegetable was soggy and tasted sour...possibly leftovers that were cooked since the morning. I would have given this 0 stars out of 5 if I could.
In short, bad hygiene, bad taste. Dine here at...

Therefore to outsiders like us we may find the name somewhat misleading but don't let that fool you. The nasi lemak here resembles nasi kandar at maybe 90% similarity but the taste was like several times better. I don't have the words to describe how awesome it was. I usually unable to finish one standard serving of nasi kandar but for this nasi lemak royale I ended up ordering a second plate! Definitely a must have for me when I go visiting...
