As the name suggested ... that's the star dish!
We tried to be early and reached there before 6pm, thinking that we would have no problem getting a table for dinner. As I turned into the road in front of the restaurant my expression turned from 😋 to 😱 to see the people queueing outside. I asked the rest to wait in the car while I went there to check.
Turned out we had to write our phone number and no of pax on a piece of paper and wait like everyone else. It took me a whole 30-40 minutes before being called, and I had to wait while envying those who had already eating happily inside the restaurant.
Note: Waiting time can be quite long as they were inundated with endless stream of patrons. If you want things fast ie. Extra plates, utensils, ice or Chinese tea refill, please do self-service like I did. Talked to a friendly uncle there and he appreciated that I took the initiative to do so.
◾Bubur goreng aka fried porridge - initially we were sceptical when they suggested 2 bowls but we still nodded our heads anyway. It turned out to be blessing in disguise - not only we thoroughly enjoyed the darkish savoury porridge that was laden with pork lards, yam pieces and dried squid (which explained the fragrant aroma and flavour), it wasn't enough to all of us. The yaw char koay (fried fritters) pieces were immediately disappeared because everyone was hungry and it's yaw char koay 🤣 ◾fried mee hoon with crabs - minimum 2 crabs were required. Another hit dish.. gotta love every strand of the vermicelli coated with the black soy sauce and I swear I could taste the sweetness from the crab. And I thought that it was too much after the porridge 😅 but we still finished it. ◾steamed clams (lala) - this dish wasn't perfect. Some (minority) of the clams had gone and don't you hate it when you ter-eaten one? Overall a good dish ◾fried nam yue chicken wing - and I was glad when I ordered this. Perfectly deep fried with the flavours locked in. I only managed to eat one while the hungry pack jostled for a piece of it. ◾curry stingray - quite unique tasting where the taste of the curry powder was pronounced but didn't overpower the entire dish. ◾stir fried yaw mak - did little to reduce the guilt of the heavy dinner but still quintessential to the elderly.
It took more than an hour for our dishes to be served, but we were rewarded by the delicious dishes. Kudos to them for trying to give their best although they were clearly overwhelmed. I would love to come back for second round for...
Read moreNote- this place is not halal, and pretty much self-service. Also parking can be an issue, restaurant has limited tables for dine-in due to covid situation. No reservations since its first-come-first-serve.
Fried porridge (yes, you heard me) is what attracted me to visit this restaurant. The waiters speak mostly hokkien, but also mandarin and bit of English as well. Looks like family business. We arrived past 6pm on weekday, and still got a table. The restaurant is trying to abide by dine-in guidelines✅ hence their biggest table can only seat a party of 6 pax. They do not have a menu. 📕 In fact, the waiter just recites their menu verbally and its quite limited. However, we proceed to order a few of the dishes and our main attraction- bubur goreng. You can see from the pics, and top rating for the fried chicken wing 🐓as well as bubur goreng. You can find fried pork lard🐽 in all their dishes, looks like a staple. Fried chicken wings are well marinated, apparently they offer pork meatballs and chicken wings on alternate days.
The bubur goreng has a slight ashy taste, very fragrant and i liked 💕 that it was not served burning hot. Again fried pork lard bits can be found, along with a few pieces of fried char kueh. Also found small bits of cuttlefish.🦑
The bill was around rm83 if i am not mistaken, which is quite affordable for such big portions. They do not serve "small" portions, their standard is min 2 pax for every dish, so if you come, make sure you have...
Read moreThe porridge and fried taufu are good, especially the taufu crispy on outside and soft inside. The lala dish unfortunately was not up to mark as some of the lala had mud inside. They didn't make the effort to sieve out the bad from the good ones. Fried meehoon with prawn at most was average. Be prepared to wait for the food for at least 30 minutes. Also there may be a long wait for the tables depending on the number of pax due to the availability of tables ie big and small tables. We had an incident where we were assigned a table soon after we arrived as a table was available. Less than a minute after we were seated we were asked to vacate the table in favour of a group of 3 and to wait for the next available table. The wait took another 10 minutes. So the sequencing of who gets what table seemed to be disorganised. I hope it was not something that regularly happens as it takes away what would otherwise be an enjoyable evening. For that I discounted the overall experience at...
