I'm a KL curry laksa enthusiast. My focus today is on Charlie's Laksa Malaysia because I could not find reviews online by established food bloggers as their focus is on Charlie's Laksa Ala Sarawak and Charlie's Curry Laksa Deluxe.
Charlie's Laksa Malaysia is currently the best on my list. A good KL curry laksa broth would need to be thick, rich and its flavour got to have depth. Charlie's Laksa Malaysia has it all and it's spicy too. I tried adding lime to it as well but I prefer it without the lime as it changes the original flavour so do try it without the lime first. Adding the 2 different types of sambal gives the laksa the full flavour but it's spicier. In either case, the broth is still excellent.
I think Charlie's Laksa Malaysia is appropriately named. It is one curry laksa I would certainly bring foreign visitors to try. I absolutely love it and would vote it as the best KL curry laksa :)
As with any curry laksa, it all depends on the individual preference so give it a try and see if you like it.
If you are a blogger reading my review or know of any contest/culinary award, do give Charlie's Laksa Malaysia a try and recommend it. Thank you in advance!
Besides that, their chicken chop is a must-try especially if you are a fan of KFC. The seasoning is similar but Charlie's version is crispy and non-greasy. It's even great with just ketchup or chilli sauce.
While the adults indulge in their laksa, Charlie's chicken chop series would satisfy the kids.
As for desserts, much has been written about Charlie's UFO tarts by established bloggers. I would recommend their Salted Egg custard flavour. One can easily indulge in 2 pieces to complete a meal.
Finally, you can't go wrong with any flavour of their homemade gelatos!
I've also tried their delivery service several times. I customised my orders (you can do so under Customer Remarks) and I'm happy that on all occasions, they got it right as I did quite a number of customisation....
Read moreBeen there few times since several years ago and I have to say my experience is only getting worse especially when it comes to customer service.
You pay for cafe level price but have to do a lot of self service like walking to the station to get your own cutleries, fill your own drink/chilli sauce and I don't even dare to sit at the table after entering the restaurant because no one is coming to my table to take my orders and I have to walk to the cashier to ask how to order food... (It is a cafe but want to operate like a fast food restaurant chain model). Customers come to a restaurant to relax and enjoy their meal, it's okay to pay a slightly higher price for the services and atmosphere. However my experience today is food are getting pricier but you are your own waiter, don't know next time will they want the customer to wash their own dishes and clean their own table after eating 😂
Another bad news is no more ala carte anymore. Most of the time during lunch hour, people just want to drop by and get a quick lunch but there is no meal that is below RM20 anymore even for just a LAKSA that has no fresh coconut milk fragrance. All mains have changed to set meal, they come with a cup of cold water/tea like the economy rice shop that you have to refill yourself... Should just tell the customers free drink is provided 😉
I completely understand it's not easy to run a F&B business and rising labour cost is a concern nowadays. But to run a business, you need to get your basics right otherwise you will only drive away your customers.
Let your customers feel they are getting what they paid for, either you go high or you go low. Don't be a short sighted businessman keep thinking of cutting cost only. Or you should just get a food truck and go sell by the roadside, everything is...
Read moreKnowing that this restaurant was famous for its chicken chop and UFO tarts, we ordered them for lunch. But before the order, we wanted to look at what else the restaurant offered and this was where the inconvenience occurred. There was no booklet or leaflet of the menu that we can view at the table. Everyone had to view the menu displayed on the wall poster and written on Manila cardboard at the counter. As a result, the counter was crowded and it certainly wasn’t easy selecting food items this way.
Coming back to the food we ordered, the chicken chop came in quite a big portion with a bowl of gravy either mushroom or black pepper. The chicken was coated with exceedingly crispy and delicious batter. It would have tasted even better if the chicken was marinated first prior to deep frying but I believe this was not the usual way of cooking chicken chop! The mushroom sauce went well with the chicken. As for the UFO tart, it was fluffy and creamy but nothing out of this world as far as taste was concerned.
We also sampled the Durian 24 ice-cream. Tasted good but frankly I would prefer eating real durian itself. The Sabah coffee tasted so-so.
Charlie’s Cafe is owned by a husband and wife team, Zonny and Debbie. They are Kadazans from Sabah.
Zonny revealed that the following food items were popular: • Chicken chop • Sarawak Laksa (3 types of gravy depending on how chili hot the customer wants) • Butter cake • UFO tarts • Durian ice-cream (D24)
Charlie’s Cafe toilet was exceptionally clean, the cleanest one so far I had ever come across in a shop...
