Their basic Midori omakase (RM288) is satisfying and delicious for the price, but was about 2 pieces more from being the perfect portion. Throw in great service and classy atmosphere and Suru is worth a try.
The Midori set starts with a nice Somen and grilled sashimi double-appetizer, a marinated thin sliced sashimi plate, followed by 6 pieces of sushi and one crazy foie gras-shrimp handroll. Overall i really liked the sushi; rice had excellent flavor and consistency, fish selection nicely varied and mostly seasonal (loved the seabream!), and while there were some flourishes, it was very subdued (until the last piece), such as yuzu powder or a squeeze of lime. In Malaysia, restraint in omakase is a rare thing!
Of course, I have to mention the ridiculous final handroll, which was a piece of shrimp with roasted foie gras, finished with caviar and GOLD DUST. I mean, I'm sure for Instagram it is perfect, but it was all a bit over the top for me. Frankly the shrimp/foie gras/caviar has such a beautiful color combination itself, the gold dust ruins it. Regardless, it was pretty delicious.
For 288rm, it's a good value, but I think one more maki roll or two more pieces of nigiri would have been perfect to fill us completely. Nothing will blow you away, but I think for the price, you shouldn’t expect it to. Certainly no cheap cop outs like tamago or salmon.
Great service and solid sushi means Suru is still a recommendation for omakase, especially for the Mont Kiara/Hartamas area, which sadly, doesn’t have a...
Read moreVisited for lunch, had the Niji coming in at RM488.
It is represented to be premium nigiri sushi with uni and caviar.
The term caviar is used in its broadest sense, and to Mr. Suru (or whoever designed their menu), it means the travesty that is truffle “caviar”. Glorified boba balls with truffle infusion.
BUT
Because it’s truffle caviar they are pretty generous with it.
With uni means a grand total of 1 nigiri with uni that showed up in a botan ebi / foie gras / truffle caviar / uni combo.
Might have showed up another time, but I forget. So alright, 2 nigiri at most.
Hot stuff.
To their credit, they did throw in a piece of foie gras they never mentioned.
Nigiri done in the shoyu rice style, and the ingredients should definitely have been better for the price point.
Chefs are skilled, but seem trained to assemble ingredients rather than cook, giving a very robotic feel to the preparation.
Service was excellent, sake selection was great, presentation was decent.
Premise design is phenomenal, and probably the highlight of the experience.
Omakase should be all about the food right?
Yes it is.
10/10 would not recommend, but what’s done is done.
Suru has to shape up, or risk getting phased out of Malaysia’s blossoming haute dining culture.
No photos, because I’m not...
Read moreMy wife brought me here for a surprise birthday dinner and boy was I surprised. The restaurant looks very minimalist from the outside, but dont let that full know, the interior of this shop blew me away. The dime lights added an additional class to the already amazing ambiance of this place. Risa was so accommodative to us as well, trying to get us as comfortable as possible , always checkingg up on us if we needed any help or any info about the meal we were about to enjoy. We took the 288 package and that was enough. Seeing the chef prepare our meals and them explaining it to us definitely made me so excited, i guess all those nights watching japanese cooking documentary finally paid off. Chef ben was kind enough to explain in detail where our fish came from and all! Anyway long story short, all i want to say is MY WIFE IS SO CLUTCH FOR PICKING THIS PLACE FOR MY BIRTHDAY DINNER. SO WIVES OUT THERE, YOU BETTER PICK THIS PLACE FOR YOUR HUSBAND’S BIRTHDAY DINNER. Trust me, he’ll be so focus looking at...
