It’s one of those nostalgic moments. This location used to be where I grew up as a kid. When houses were demolished for new redevelopment, this stretch of shophouses took over. So, this shop IS NOT INSIDE A MALL! It’s a shophouse lot.
We went for a family dinner on Friday night which is less crowded, weekends would be tougher to find table & parking. We made a reservation, got one of the 2 tables inside the aircon room deeper in closest to the kitchen. The tables outside are in non-aircon area.
We had the fried egg with shrimp, stir fry pork slices, herbal kampung chicken, minced meat tofu, Chinese spinach soup, stir fry veggie and a large fish we brought there to have them steam it for us in minced ginger. Rice is free flow, they bring you buckets of it so convenient to adjust between those who take very little rice and those who need to eat a lot of rice. I like this style.
Generally the taste of the dishes are to my liking, I like more profound taste, not bland. Love the Chinese spinach soup, at first sip, it’s a little fishy which then I realised they had tiny anchovies and tiny cubed century eggs, could use some ginger in there but I guess not everyone like gingery taste, maybe a few cloves of garlic would do the trick.
The stir fried pork slices was really nice, well marinated and the pork is not tough not fatty which both I don’t like. The shrimps in the fried egg was fresh, it soft mushy. Fried Tofu rectangles topped with minced meat was ok, nothing to shout about.
They only stock up kampung chicken which is all boney and meat is tough, I never like kampung chicken, I like meaty chicken. If you order the other types of chicken dishes, they are “gai ting” meaning chicken meat, only the herbal chicken is totally not worth...
Read moreNot good. Went there for the first time last week. When making orders, we were recommended a dish that has lots of garlic. Told the person that we don't want garlic. So we ordered kailan with salted fish - the dish came with lots of minced garlic. Surely the person who took the order could tell us that it contains that (as normally that dish should not have so much minced garlic, so which first timer would know? ) and take the initiative to make special request to the kitchen staff? The dish is filled with too much gravy... Salted fish kailan wet with gravy and minced garlic - maybe it is my lack of exposure. But the worst I have tastes. Pricey for the serving size. I don't even want to carry on with the quality anymore. I am amazed with the overall rating, which was the reason I chose to go there - probably relatives and friends, and/and some...
Read moreThe service was good. However I think the food is absolutely bland, not as flavourful as many other nearby Chinese restaurants. Surrounding is so noisy & unkempt. Lady boss is friendly though but I think for the quality of food served, the costs is so expensive! Kangkung belacan was okay not to my liking, steamed ginger fish was tasteless, there was hardly a big portion of ginger in it, lacked seasoning yet it was pricey. Sizzling homemade tofu was not as tasty as I thought it would be. Kam Heong prawns didn’t taste like kam heong, it was more like kicap prawns. Disappointing experience. I don’t think I’ll ever come back here again unfortunately. I just feel the other reviews here overrates this place baselessly. We couldn’t even finish all the ordered dishes as we usually would...
