I recently booked a room at the Wang Chun Ting restaurant to celebrate my wife's birthday. The booking was for 15 pax. I had selected two wines to be served with the lunch, a red and a white, in advance via email . The Captain advised me at the lunch that the white was not available. I asked why I had not been advised in advance, to which there was no reply.
So I asked the wait-staff to serve the red. It then became apparent that none of them had a clue how to use a cork screw. Once the red wine had been opened, I then noted that it was being stored in a full ice bucket!
The 15 guests soon drank the one bottle that the wait-staff had provided, so I ordered another. It took an age to arrive as it apparently came from another part of the hotel. Once this was finished I ordered another, only to be advised that there were only two bottles of this type of wine available in the hotel. I therefore was forced to order another wine, but the same thing happened - after two bottles the hotel had run out. Exasperated, I asked what was going on, and was told that the hotel only stocked two bottles of each wine for security reasons! I find it remarkable that a French hotel that seemingly prides itself on its wines, has such a policy; that steps can't be taken to anticipate likely demand given numbers at the lunch; and that staff do not know how to serve wine.
At the end of the meal I asked for the bill. The first time it arrived it included a charge for a course that was part of the set menu, so I sent the bill back to be recalculated. The second time it was presented I noted that we had not been charged for the bottle of white wine, so again, it had to be sent away to be recalculated. After leaving the restaurant and having time to review the third iteration of the bill, together with the terms of my Accor Plus membership I noted that I was not provided a 15% discount off of my beverage bill. This required me to return to the hotel to obtain the refund.
All in all, what should have been a relaxing celebratory lunch given the planning that had gone into it, proved to be anything but. I would not accept this type of service from an average restaurant, far less a five star hotel. Moreover, many of the problems seemed to be down to lack of training or poor policy (corkscrew, ice bucket, having sufficient wine to hand,...
Read moreAs in most Chinese restaurants in a 5-star hotel, the décor is always very opulent and grand. Oriental interior with huge chandelier of red lantern lamps, WCT is a fine dining restaurant in Sofitel Hotel located at Damansara city area. Reading from reviews that rave about the Peking duck being roasted in the special wood-fired oven, I decide to check it out. Lychee woods are used to infuse a light smokiness to the meat. We were lucky that during our visit, there was a promotion on. Peking duck was MYR122. Server brought the duck in front of us before slicing the skin. To be honest, I was not impressed. The skin did not shine nor seem crispy. It was just plain ordinary. Look can be deceiving. The skin was crispy when I bit into it. It was delicious. Put the skin in the heated pancake, add some brisk scallion and thin slice of cucumber with sweet bean sauce, it was heavenly yummy. We requested the 2 drumsticks to be separated from the rest of the meat to be used for fried rice. It was a wise choice. Just too much meat. The meat was tender and flavourful. Fried rice with duck meat had a smoky flavour. It was very well done. Not oily. However, it was a little too much for three of us that we needed to package some back home. Beside the duck, we also ordered the braised puff broccoli (MYR36). The tofu was very soft inside and skin is crispy. Skillfully done. Broccoli was soft but not mushy. It will go well with white rice. This was happy dinner. Service was excellent. Did not need to wait too long for the food. Maybe due to there were 3 tables occupied (including us) during this weekday dinner. Very worth the effort of coming here. We alighted at a Semantan MRT station which was far to walk. We should alight at Pusat Bandar Damansara which was nearer. Having said that, there are construction work nearby at the time of writing which makes walking a...
Read moreThis restaurant ticked all the boxes for an awesome dining experience. Just walked in randomly after our gym session at level 3 of the hotel. We were immediately welcomed by the captain jimmy who was awesome right from the start. It was 6.30pm and the restaurant was still empty. Jimmy guided us to our seats and showed us the menu. We ordered half of a Peking duck and jimmy introduced a dish (crab meat with tofu) that’s not on the menu after hearing that we wanted something light in view of the Peking duck that we had ordered. It was a great recommendation. The crab was fresh and the tofu flavorful. We opted for the Peking duck meat to be stir fried and jimmy recommended wrapping the meat in iceberg lettuce which was another great recommendation. It was very refreshing and didn’t taste heavy at all. We didn’t order any carbo for the meal and the portion was to the point (which jimmy mentioned that the food would be enough for the two of us). Superb service and judgement from jimmy and we loved all the food. Not forgetting our lady server Sri who constantly checked with us on our dinner and ensured that our tea cups were always filled.
The restaurant was very tastefully decorated with a very upmarket feel to it. Tables were spaced which added the exclusivity of the restaurant.
We felt the price was reasonable in view of the quality ingredients and great chefs cooking up great tasting dishes, the extraordinary level of service and the ambience of the restaurant. We will definitely be back in future to try out their dim sum dishes! Keep up the...
