If you are looking for a place to enjoy authentic Nyonya cuisine in Melaka, you should check out BESS Kopitiam. This award-winning restaurant has been serving delicious Nyonya laksa since 2009, and it recently moved to a new and spacious location that can accommodate more customers.

We visited BESS Kopitiam on a Saturday afternoon, and we were greeted by the friendly and helpful staff. They recommended their signature Nyonya laksa, which was a bowl of rich and creamy coconut broth with noodles, cucumber, egg, and tofu. The laksa was amazing, with a perfect balance of spicy, sour, and sweet flavours. It was one of the best laksa we have ever tasted, and we could tell that they used fresh and quality ingredients.

We also ordered their kaya butter toast, which was a classic Malaysian breakfast item. The toast was crispy and buttery, and the kaya (coconut jam) was homemade and fragrant. We paired it with some hot and cold beverages, such as coffee, tea, and cendol. The cendol was a refreshing dessert, with shaved ice, coconut milk, palm sugar, and green jelly. It was not the best cendol we have had, but it was decent enough.

The decor of the restaurant was a mix of traditional and modern, with wooden furniture, colourful tiles, and vintage posters. The place was clean and comfortable, and the service was efficient and courteous. The prices were on the higher side, but we felt that it was worth it for the quality and taste of the food.

The only downside was the parking situation, which was quite challenging, especially during weekends and peak hours. We had to park quite far away from the restaurant and walk for about 4 minutes. However, we did not mind it too much, as we enjoyed the scenery and the atmosphere of the neighbourhood.

Overall, we had a wonderful experience at BESS Kopitiam, and we would highly recommend it to anyone who loves Nyonya food or wants to try something different. It is a must-try destination in Melaka, and we will come back...

Melaka Trip Part V

One of the most mentioned places in the group chat was Bess Kopitiam and its Nyonya Laksa. Upon searching via Google, I noticed that it was out of the town centre. Pitched the idea of having breakfast at Bess and everyone was game.

With an empty stomach the next morning, I set the GPS to take me all the way there. I thought that it would be less crowded on weekday despite holiday but how I was wrong - the hungry and eager crowds packed the whole place and we managed to get one of the last few tables.

◾Nyonya Laksa with Tauki (fried beancurd skin) RM10.00 - personally I liked the laksa broth which was rich in spices, not too thick nor thin, and with right amount of santan. Mix the accompanying sambal into the soup, stir and the flavour suddenly enhanced. Price starts at RM8.50 without Tauki. ◾Mee Siam with fried egg RM9.00 - another hit as the vermicelli had this tinge of sourish (kalamansi) and when eaten with the sambal, it just felt so right. ◾Nasi lemak Ayam Complete RM13.00 - nothing spells a dish that comes with all the bells & whistles than this. It came with fried chicken & fried egg. Fried chicken was slightly dry but flavourful, and the sambal was good. Appreciate the addition of kangkung. ◾Butter kaya toast RM3.50 - good although not the best I had. ◾Babe Hawaiian Toast RM5.00 - interesting with a pineapple slice covered with a melted cheese on top of the toast. ◾Garlic Top Toast RM3.00 - essentially a garlic bread but with their own style. ◾ Drinks - lucky for us, the kopi and teh had enough oomph to make our morning brighter.

It was worth coming all the way for the...

This is a simple restaurant located in Bukit Baru area of Melaka.

It had recently moved to a new premise which is still in the Bukit Batu area. The new premise is larger and less crowded at the moment.

The menu has not changed .

It serves one of the best Nyonya laksa in Melaka. Besides that, they also serve good Nasi Lemak and Mee Siam. Surprisingly they serve a good toasts too. Their Fried Chicken and Fried Tofu Skin with Fish Paste are recommended too.

Their drinks are the usual coffeeshop varieties.

Their prices are reasonable. Cash and e-wallets are accepted here.

Service is reasonable and waiting time is not long.

Cleanliness is good.

Wash Room and toilet facilities are available here.

Parkings are roadside parkings. At the moment, parking spaces are easily available.

Handicapped patrons can patronize this restaurant easily.

Food delivery is available through Grab Food and Food Panda.

29-06-2022 : Prices and food portions maintained.

01-10-2022 : Business is operating near normal at the new location. Prices had increased slightly. Prices are still competitive and reasonable.

12-03-2023 : The coffee shop is operating without Covid-19 restrictions. Prices still competitive. Food quality and portions remained unchanged.

14-07-2023 : It is indeed heartening to find out that prices had remained unchanged since last posting. Food portions and food quality had maintained. Nyonya Laksa is still highly...

I wrote about this place when I visited the old shop at Bukit Baru. Back then the crowd was crazy with lots of good reviews. I finally got the chance to visit the kopitiam again after they moved to a new premise. The new restaurant is very spacious and able to accommodate lots more table. Food wise... Big disappointment! What really disappointed me was the drinks. I find it hard to believe that they serve the hot drinks in plastic cups. One of the very core success of a kopitiam has to be the coffee or tea that serves in hot glass cup. Next come to toast bread. I don't know if they have tough time finding traditional bread from local bakery during CNY or other reasons, the roti butter kaya was served with those bread that we usually buy from supermarket like gardenxx or massixx. Unbelievable. I had to cancel the nasi lemak because they couldn't prepare in time. Mee siam was not bad but it couldn't compensate the disappointment I had for the drinks and toast breads. The guy who led us to the table, I wish he could be more friendly and sunny. He didn't even bother to thank the customers when we left the shop. This was quickly noticed by my family too. Having said that, I can now imagine why wouldn't there be a big crowd on Saturday morning, peak hours for breakfast. Hope the service and food can be further improved and resume the big crowds it once had in the old shop. Ganbateh!
