The ramen's broth (shoyu and black garlic (?)) was flavorful and tasty, and the texture of the noodles were great. The meat of the shi shi ramen was decent. After I tried a small bite, I regretted not ordering ramen as well! Rating: 5/5]
The teriyaki pork cube rice was good as well, both in terms of flavor, texture, and the quantity of meat. I can't say that much about it because I only ate a bite, though. [Rating: 4/5]
The mentaiko soboro salmon rice was relatively good. The mentaiko was sweet, but missing a little of the iconic "mentai" flavour, and the topping on the rice consisted of: 1/2 salmon was chopped into small chunks (because it was "soboro" salmon), and 1/2 scrambled eggs, and quite a large portion of 酸菜, aka pickled mustard greens (they were also spicy!). [Rating: 3.5/5]
There were some lovely condiments on the table, being fried garlic, very mildly spicy bean sprouts, ramen sauce, andw some garlic in a dark sauce (?). I added. the fried garlic to the salmon rice, which was nice. [Rating (fried garlic): 5/5: 5/5]
The interior atmosphere was quite nice – the walls were calm earthy shades (lots of grey), and the wooden decor was splendid, giving off a rustic Japan feel. There weren't many other customers inside at around 4pm, which made the environment feel quite chill.
The exterior was absolutely stunning – the shop looked as if it was just taken out of Japan and put in Malaysia, and it made for great photos! Combined with the great, cooling weather the day I came, it felt really relaxing.
Overall, I recommend getting the ramen as it tastes really...
Read moreAbout Menya Shi Shi Do: Mainly sells ramen in Tonkotsu broth (pork bone soup). There's green onion, black fungus, Japanese soft boiled egg and Char Siew (Roasted Pork slice) in the ramen. It has different soup flavours such as soy sauce, basil, curry and etc. You can also combine up to 3 flavours in a bowl of ramen. Not to forget it has some special ramen such as Aka Oni (extra spicy ramen), iipon Yaki Buta Tsukemen (big slab of roasted pork) ramen.
About the environment: The design are pretty Japanese authentic with red lantern and comic book pages on the wall. Seats are... ehm normal wooden seats you can get from Ikea. Do expect a long queue during peak hour. The distance between seats are far enough during covid-19 pandemic.
About the dish: The soup is smooth and mildly rich with sweet flavour of pork bone, slightly smooth texture of collagen. Noodle is chewy and absorbed the taste of the soup enough to be flavourful. Japanese soft boiled egg has runny york which is good but the outer egg doesn't have enough flavour, as if the egg is not marinate long enough by looking at the colour. Black fungus are crunchy and flavourful itself and with the soup. Char Siew is thin and rich in flavour, the saltiness makes it stands out from the soup in a good way. The fat level of Char Siew is low but still very easy to chew.
Conclusion: I love the richness of the soup where you can still finish the whole bowl without feeling greasy. With RM22-26 a bowl, it is a reasonable price and I would love to revisit and try some of their special ramen....
Read moreWe hear a lot about this place and gave it our shot, but sadly we were disappointed .
We walked from the parking lot to find this beautifully designed building and environment. Indeed a landmark.
As we walked in, sadly the placed smelled of durian. Nothing against durian, but their promo really affects the overall experience of the place.
The orders were made through a menu tablet. Nothing against it, just not my preference. I would rather speak to someone regarding the menu being the price is a little steep. *No point reduction here.
Now to the food.
We ordered:
Ajitama chashu ramen (triple flavour) 3.5/5 RM26++ black garlic, spicy, basil soup Was very peppery (black pepper) Basil was interesting. Prettt sure they used Thai basil for this sweetness. the soup was decent in texture as the richness does cost your mouth chashu was really good. Has the texture of good ham. Doesn’t melt in your mouth, but no effort to chew.
Yakibuta Tsukemen (Black Garlic) 2/5 RM39++ Soup was on the sweet side and not as fatty or rich. Noodles were nice and springy Pork was very good melt in your mouth sweet char siew. Really this was the highlight of our visit. If anything, just get this pork, forget about the ramen here. Wood ear fungus was nothing special, just a thicker variety Egg was done well
Overall not a great ramen experience. If anything, come for their proteins. Chashu and yakibuta are fantastic
