When I initially spotted the name of this place in a sibling’s Facebook page, my first impression was “Ah?, why eat in a hardware shop?!!”. Yes, the name “Syarikat” is not typically used for a kopitiam. Though this is a rather ”modern” iteration of the traditional Hainanese Kopitiam. The shop is nestled in a quieter row, along Jalan SS3/31 in Taman University, with Rockwall Grill and bistro on one end and a coffee shop at the other. The place is air-conditioned and has simple/basic decorations. 3 rows of tables with rattan backed chairs. The menu, aside from the usual kopitiam fare, is supplemented by some Western favourites like Pasta and Black Pepper Chicken Chops. As the range of items was too many to try at one seating, I ordered what any self-respecting kopitiam would be proud to serve; the Malaysian Classic Duo (half boiled eggs and toasted bread), the Hor Kee Coffee and an Egg Mayo Croissant, just to complete the meal. The half-boiled egg was nicely cooked though the yolk “leaked” after being cracked open – an early sign that the egg was not super fresh. The overall taste, though after adding a touch of soya and pepper was just nice. It passed my test. The toast, with crunchy with generous coating of pandan kaya and slabs of butter. Taste right too! The coffee was all right, rich aroma, slight acidity, not too sweet. The Croissant was freshly baked, soft to the touch but the egg and mayo, in my opinion lacked the oomph, but not too bad altogether. I left satisfied, and will be back another day to try the other items...
Read moreI was very disappointed with the customer service, particularly the attitude of both waiter and waitress this morning. I felt particularly cold and asked whether we could move one of the double tables seating 4 beside the single table next to us that had less direct air con blowing onto my neck but was rudely told No by the waiter. Considering that the restaurant was quite empty at 9am ish, I did not see why this was not allowed, no explanation given. So I decided to leave my table and sat on the single table beside my party. When my food arrived, the waitress was not happy to leave my dish on the single table, I asked if it was ok but she plonked it down and her rude sweeping hand gesture towards me was totally uncalled for. I did not raise a fuss at the time out of respect for the others in my party as I was their guest but I feel you should not be working in hospitality as I have come out to have a lovely time and not to have to experience "young" people being rude to elderly people like me. To this young couple, honour your parents and show them that you were brought...
