Pre-MCO ya 🙏🏻 I am still abiding by the law
Man, I miss dining out! Come weekend, normally I'd think of what to eat and where to bring them to eat. A bit of family time, eating some nice dishes together. Even now that the conditions have been loosened, I'd still think twice before going out.
So, Tang Room is operated by people behind Oriental Group. Located in Starling Mall in Damansara Utama (Uptown), this restaurant is the nearest to me among others. When I'm feeling lazy to drive far, this place is just less than 10 minutes away.
Armed with a bottle of Spanish brut, the evening is already 50% guaranteed to be a good one.. while the balance depends on the outcome of the dishes.
◾icy Japanese vegetable salad - gaining popularity as salad of choice lately, I just love the crunchy texture of this veggie. ◾charcoal grilled iberico pork neck with garden green salad - nothing spells sin and healthy at the same time. ◾Indonesian style freshwater prawns with vermicelli - when it comes to seafood, it'll not be cheap but I can't resist ordering this dish everytime I'm at Oriental. The creamy and delicious soup alone was enough to make me drink all.. just dunk the mihun into the soup and let it soaked up all the soup. ◾Salt & pepper pork trotter - crispy skin and moist tender meat coupled with the simple salt & pepper made this porcine dish a favourite of mine. ◾beancurd in crab roe sauce ◾braised egg noodle with minced meat & eggplant - I had to feed the small ones and they liked this dish.
The dinner went well - we finished everything, we chatted and laughed together, and we even finished the whole...

2018 - Another food venue at the Starling that has all the looks of somewhere that one can expect high quality food, good service and price tag to go with food and service. Instead, despite asking our waiter several times to check on the status of our order and receiving assurance that our food would be with us shortly, we waited nearly 50 minutes before we got our first dish ( brocolli in oyster sauce) and another 5 minutes before the next dish (tofu) appeared.
In the meantime, the people on the next table cracked the sh*ts and walked out. (They were there before us). This is the 3rd Oriental Group restaurant I have visited in 3 days. I must say that I agree with other reviewers about the quality and service of restaurants in this group. Oriental Group restaurant probably built its reputation on quality and service. From my past visits, I would have said that an Oriental Group restaurant is a place where you can be assured that food is reliable.
I do hope that this poor service is only a temporary glitch as it would be a shame for patrons and staff if the poor service and quality to fester on.
(Note: As we drove out of the carpark, we saw our waiter having a smoke in the car park. He saw us too and quickly turned to face the wall as we...

One of my favourite dish is the Iberico Roasted Pork Ribs, it’s so well marinated and finger lickin good, that’s why they provide plastic gloves. However, this time, the ribs was on the skinny side and lacking more meat on the bone but otherwise still delicious. This dish is best enjoyed with a larger group, at least 5 pax.
The salted egg prawns is also another winner with generous coating of creamy salted egg- also love that it is deshelled and deveined. My other all time favourite is the braised brinjal with crab meat, it’s not too oily like other brinjal dishes and the raw egg makes the sauce so silky and tasty.. be careful, it will make you have more rice!
One dish that I always order that is not on the menu is the “Nam Yee Kah Heong Chye” (fermented red bean curd vegetarian pot) - this is probably the best I’ve had ever!
This is also where I love to get my Hokkein mee fix, it’s topped with lots of crispy pork lard bits that does so much for elevating...
