LAN JE used to be a house hold name when I crave for fish ( can’t compare talapiah to sung fish), specifically these days we are much into steam fish head. If body it’s WAN YU ( sorry I’m too lazy to google for the proper name) and if fish head its SUNG YU tau. Just like the saying goes “sung yu tau, wan yu mei”. I’ve tried enough steam fish head ( 4 floor to Sg Besi to what ever foodies would share on line) but I’ve never tasted one that is as fresh, omega filled, no smell/fishy odor nor muddy filled flavor free as this place. I’ve eaten here so many times until the owner sees me and would walk out of his kitchen just to say hi. He is a Hakka guy that’s so friendly, warmth and welcome us every single time. His dishes are just limited to few flavors but mine is definitely the silky smooth bean paste sauce steamed to perfection but then my partner loved the Chinese dried veggie minced sauce hence today I lost. Just one bowl of white plain rice plus one green ( it’s called Dai Wong Miu and it’s crunchy in texture even if it’s just blanched and stirred with soya sauce king and drizzle of garlic oil) will make me a very happy old man.
Old review (2022) I think I’ve shared this polished gem before but was long time ago. Today venturing back here for lunch was never disappointing. The consistency of the two flavours of steam fish that we ordered had remain the same over the years, the simple conclusion that we could give is that the chef and owner remains the same. The chef is now a good good friend after years of eating here and has always been friendly and most importantly stayed humble and his insistence of looking after the steaming all by him self. Hence the consistency and never disappointing taste. For the three of us today we polished off two midsize fish head and a plate of...
Read moreThis restaurant served only steamed food and located a few shop lots away from Restoran Lee Hong Kee. It occupied the ground floor of a shop lot and was air conditioned. We ordered:
Steamed “Soong Yee” fish head in two styles - one in soya sauce and the other in “Cheong Jing” sauce. Steamed minced pork Steamed sayur rajah Steamed soft tofu
For steamed fish, the sauce is most important, apart from the freshness of the fish. Here, they didn’t disappoint. The fish was fresh and the sauces were superb though the Cheong Jing sauce was a bit too sweet. However, I still find the the steamed “Soong Yee” served at Restoran Mun Kee slightly better (the streetside stall, not the proper restaurant close to the end of the road. Same owner).
The steamed minced pork was delicious. It wasn’t hard (caused by adding too much flour) or too salty (from the salted Choy Poh) but the portion was small.
The vegetable and tofu were average. Food prices were reasonable.
Nice healthy steamed food for a change but beware - waiting for the food would take quite some time, probably the steaming process required a longer...
Read moreWhen one of our foodster suggested lunch at this restaurant....we really felt it could have been a Forest Gump box of chocolate situation. It's in a proper shoplot and air-conditioned, so pleasant enough in this lunch weather. We ordered quite a few dishes, and the steamed fish head stood out as the notable dish. We had 2 different steamed fish heads, but the one that you must order is the signature with 'garlicky' topping. The other 'cheong ching' ....so so only.
They do hv other home style dishes....so feel free to look at my posted pics. We ordered the Cha Yoke and the Yam Steamed Pork Slices. Pretty decent homestyled dishes. All in all, lunch for 7pax came up to RM200 which was reasonable. So do go try as this is restaurant is definitely what i would call ....Honest Food with Honest Price. ######### If you like my review, do give a 👍.....better still follow me on my foodster quest....
