Visited Nam Heong Ipoh @ Damen again and this time round, other than my usual order of ice coffee and chicken tart, i tried their chicken hor fun (chicken kuey teow), butter kaya toast, and half-boiled eggs.
Chicken Hor Fun - frankly, i personally like Nam Heong's version better than the Thean Chun (the popular "House of Mirrors") version in Ipoh. It is still as deliciously tasty but more "refined" in flavours. i just cant accept the version of Thean Chun (though i am from Ipoh) as its too overwhelming in flavours.
If compare with Kar Heong of SS14 Subang (i.e. my usual place for a chicken hor fun fix), Kar Heong dont stand a chance. I prefer Nam Heong's version, in fact, while writing this review, i am akready thinking of my bowl of chicken hor fun fix.
Nam Heong's version, apart from the delicious tasty soup (MSG may be presence as in most F&B outlets, but the amount is not prominent as i didnt get the after-effect of it), is that they actually give small slices of chicken and not thinly shredded chicken. I read in one of their review stating that Nam Heong's version is tasteless and too little chicken, probably, the reviewer is havibg obe of those days when suddenly having a ultra unreasonable benchmark. Trust me, i ate it and its good.
The kaya butter toast, it is authentic, and i prefer Nam Heong's version to Old Town. Similarly, i too prefer their half-boiled eggs compared to Old Town.
With this review, it may sound that i have a share in Nam Heong. ha ha. I wish i have, but i am just a normal food reviewer, who hapoens to enjoy food and state what i eat and taste as it is at that moment. I have no connection with Nam Heong.
As both Nam Heong and Old Town serving Ipoh food, i casually asked Nam Heong if they are related or at least sone form of association. The answer given is NOT related in...

Atmosphere: 4.25🌟 It's not very packed, plenty of seatings. Tables are solid and chairs have extra pad for added comfort. Tables have decent gaps between each other. I like the 2 tables with the big sofa like chair where I can lay down. It feels most comfortable and can relax and enjoy passing views. However, if you are shorter than average and would like to eat noodles, this spot may be a problem as it's a bit lower but you can go for those long chair seats which also looks comfortable.
Food: Siew Mai 3🌟 They ran out of chicken soup hence I decided to try this. Taste and texture is okay, not sure what is the red dot thing that supposed to immigrate fish roe? The size is a bit smaller though as the meat in the center isn't fully packed and doesn't feel super fresh. Priced at Rm 7.90+ it's not cheap
Dessert: Signature Mix Fruit Ice 3.25🌟 Comes with fresh fruits like lychee x 4, slice dragon fruit x 4, mango cube x 4, jackfruit slice x 8, watermelon cube x 4), peanuts and vanilla ice cream x 1. I think milk is added and maybe syrup but it doesn't feel too sweet. The ice is quite rough but it's expected. It's pretty good and refreshing. Priced at Rm 10.90+
Drinks: Nanyang Coffee C (Cold) 3.5🌟 Gawd, super thick coffee flavour and it's smooth. Good choice if you need a wake up drink....
Read moreMy elderly parents had a few unfortunate experiences at Nam Heong restaurant in DaMen. Despite the restaurant being nearly empty, they were asked to move tables TWICE due to a rigid policy about table occupancy, showing a lack of consideration for elderly customers. They won't allow them to sit at table for four because they were only two. It was not peak period, and there were plenty of empty tables. This was ordered by a senior looking waistress.
The "Lo Mai Kai" was disappointing, overly mushy and closer to baby food than a proper dim sum dish.
Furthermore, our dish was served on a chipped plate, which is considered a bad luck in Chinese culture.
The service timing was bad as well, with drinks (coffees) arriving a full ten minutes after our food, which meant eating without a beverage to accompany the meal. Restaurant should serve free drinking water if they can't cope with drinks coming before or at the same time as food.
A few weeks before, they brought a visitor from overseas there and ordered half a Kampung Chicken. Very very tough meat. Not edible.
The lack of adaptability, sad food quality, and poor service over a few visits left a very bad taste. They were very upset, told their friends and do not...
