Just after servicing my car at a specialist workshop in Ampang, we decided to try out the famous Sun Ming roast duck in Tmn Connaught, Cheras. A quick google check says restaurant opens till 18:00 hrs...perfect!
Setting up waze and we were quickly on our way. Being a public holiday our journey was smooth in this notorious section of automobile clogged neighbourhood.
We arrived 90 minutes before closing time, but alas, they were sold out! What an anti-climax.
Next choice was Puchong's famous Soon Lok roast duck rice restaurant. Operating hours 09:00 21:00hrs.
Upon arrival, it was a glorious sight to behold with it's display glass cabinet filled with juicy looking roast ducks as well as BBQ meats and best of all - no queue!
We decided to order take-away half bird at (rm30.00) and the irresistible BBQ pork, both char-siew & siew-yoke (rm20.00). Their special house made sweet/savoury and spicy sauce included with order.
First bite of the roast duck reveals a hint of charcoal flavour of it's skin while the flesh was rather light on taste from herbal marinate. The meat itself was not as juicy as it appears to be - perhaps they over roasted the bird that we were served.
Nevertheless, I would give them a two thumbs up for their BBQ meats. Tender char-siew with wonderful taste to every mouthful while the siew-yoke was evenly layered belly cut with super crackling skin.
All said we have no reservations about coming back for their BBQ meats and as for their their roast duck?...well, let's just say - better...

I recently visited Soon Lok for takeaway after hearing many positive reviews, especially about the roasted duck. Unfortunately, my experience didnât meet the expectations.
I ordered a quarter of the roasted duck (specifically upper quarter) and made payment accordingly. However, upon reaching home, I noticed two issues: The receipt did not indicate whether it was the upper or lower quarter, which is unusual. At other well-known roasted duck places (such as one in Cheras), the part of the duck is clearly stated on the receipt, especially since pricing differs between upper and lower quarters. This creates transparency and avoids confusion. I only received one small packet of duck sauce â seriously? For a full quarter duck, this doesnât make sense. It felt more like what youâd give with a packet of duck rice. I didnât order duck rice; I ordered a proper portion of duck meat.
I donât blame the staff directly â I believe they are trained to be strict on portion control and cost. But this level of skimping feels excessive, especially when the restaurant has expanded from one to three shoplots. With that kind of growth, youâd expect better attention to customer experience, not less.
To be honest, I left feeling a bit cheated. Based on this experience, I would rate it 2 out of 5.
I hope the management reviews this kind of feedback seriously. A small detail like sauce quantity or receipt clarity may seem minor, but it affects how guests perceive value...
Read moreI remembered last time when I visited, they cheated on me with the foods a ordered. went there and ordered 1 set of duck's breast. I told the boss lady I only want duck's breast. foods came with only 2 super small pcs of duck's breast and others were duck's wings (more on bones and skin). hence, I called the lady boss over and asked if she brought the wrong dish to me, she asked, "what have you ordered?" I said duck's breast. she looked at the plate and replied with a rude manners "it's duck breast, correct". used the chopstick pick up the duck's sharp wing and asked her, "is this even breast?". she took away and added 1 pc of duck breast to the plate and bring back. this is where I felt cheated. gave me duck's wings but charged me for the price of duck's breast. if you were to cheat, at least cheat on someone that ordered "duck rice" as they might not be clear with duck's parts. but I can clearly order duck's breast, means I am very familiar with that part. why do you even cheat on your customers like this? so, warning to their customers, be very sure what came on your table is what...
