The best ice cream in Malta. Let me qualify that; >maybe< the best price-quality-quantity combination is at Sottozero, by virtue of their gigantic portion sizes. But the best quality is definitely at Rivareno. First of all, the staff knows ice cream (and is very friendly; I was a regular customer in the time I stayed in Malta, and always enjoyed our small chats). And the ingredients of the ice cream are sourced from where they should be; pistachio from the Greek islands (or Turkey), vanilla from Madagascar, et cetera. Combine a capable, professional staff, with high-quality ingredients, and you get wonderfully unique and absolutely delicious ice cream flavours. Of course, any truly good ice cream place will have a delicious dark chocolate sorbet (yes, there are objectively correct answers to 'what is your favourite ice cream', and this should be one answer :P). Which Rivareno >definitely< has. And vanilla can easily be 'a bit bland', or 'too normal', but in a good ice cream place, vanilla is not at all some kind of 'default' or 'safe' flavour, no, there - like here - vanilla is also delicious and worthy of being a flavour on its own. This already probably makes your ice cream place the best of any given city. Rivareno goes much further. Pistachio is very hard to go wrong with, and as such, pistachio is usually good - Rivareno sells one of the best pistachios I've ever had, and Rivareno also sells a sorbet variant of pistachio which tastes completely different yet equally delicious! I loved trying them both at the same time, they are so different yet so good, love it! But pistachio is, as I wrote, a safe flavour. Rivareno also has a lot of unique flavours, and each and every one of them is clearly designed by someone who >knows< ice cream. This is not 'oh, Kinder Bueno is hip, let's make ice cream of it' (and hey, nothing wrong with that, I enjoy that too), this is an art, and it shows. This is cremino and nocciola and many Italian words that must all translate to 'absolutely delicious' because that is the description they all have in common. Do check out Rivareno's website! There are surprisingly many negative reviews of Rivareno, most of them noting the price/quantity, and as I wrote in the beginning; if you're not passionate about ice cream, you'd be better off at Sottozero for your money. And if you're not getting ice cream (but instead a waffle or something), I can easily imagine there are better places for that. But if you love ice cream, you will find the best quality here, and you will definitely enjoy Rivareno's ice cream - so go! :)

Rivareno in Sliema offers an authentic Italian dessert experience that’s simply irresistible. We indulged in their rich, creamy ice cream and the decadent amarenata ice cake—each bite was a perfect balance of sweetness and texture. The crepe was equally delightful, freshly made and filled with flavor. The warm hospitality of the Italian staff added to the charm, making the experience even more enjoyable. Whether you're craving classic gelato or a delicious pastry, Rivareno is a must-visit for dessert lovers in Malta! Highly recommended!

After an evening meal we set out to find some gelato and came across Rivareno. We received a really friendly greeting and offered a r taster which just happened to be sorbet and dairy free, and that stuff Anne as she is rather intolerant. The guy behind the counter understood Access issues. I opted for the cassata gelato, which was wonderful, and Anne had vodka and lime sorbet and she loved it. We highly recommend Rivareno! Check out their cakes as well as their gelati.

I first discovered this place 6 years ago, during a holiday in Palma de Mallorca, and was absolutely delighted to see that they have other locations in Malta. Whilst the ice cream flavour is as good as I remember it from my Palma holiday, I was disappointed to find out that value for money is very different. Concretely, I normally always go for a medium sized cup with two flavours, and find that it is more than enough. However, at this location, I ordered the large size as the medium cup is smaller than the one that I used to get in Palma, and still found that there's not enough in there, as they don't fill it up properly. Instead of feeling satisfied and almost full at the end, I kept feeling frustrated and wishing I had had more. Prices have gone up as a result of the rise in the cost of raw materials, which I can appreciate isn't their fault. However, they're pushing shrinkflation a bit far: 5.50€ for a large cup which contains less ice cream than a medium one would, is unreasonable. I got so frustrated with this that I stopped going after 3 times, although I was sure that we would visit every single day of our 8 day long holiday with my husband and son. Also, prices of other items aren't clearly indicated: I asked for the price of the small pistachio cheesecake, was told it was 10.50€, which seemed far too much for a small cake, and isn't written anywhere. If you want your ice cream in the largest cone or wafer cup, it says "by weight", but no price mentioned. There definitely needs to be more transparency but most importantly: please, fill up those cups generously! You might have saved on a bit of ice cream, but lost out on 5 visits from three faithful customers. Your ice cream is too good to be dished out so sparingly.

Response to the owner's comment: thank you for getting back to me. As I said in my review, I completely understand that inflation and general cost increases have made it necessary for you to increase prices. As you have indicated, everybody is doing this, as price increases can be noticed everywhere. What I am criticising, however, is the fact that you are practising shrinkflation, ie you are reducing the size of your products whilst increasing prices at the same time, so that customers are paying more for less ice cream. This is not fair, or acceptable, as it goes way beyond merely increasing prices. You have taken it too far, which is costing you customers. I join you in hoping that these increases end soon, however your customers might not come back if you carry on doubly...

I visited Malta and went to RivaReno to enjoy some ice cream. The different ice creams are incredibly tasty. I can absolutely recommend stepping by for some self made ice cream. The staff is also really friendly. If you want to enjoy your ice cream you can sit inside at a small table or outside in front of the shop. In summer Malta is very hot so sitting outside is enjoyable only at night. I wanted to sit inside (I went there during the day) but unfortunately the shop doesn't provide AC so it's not really comfortable to stay inside longer than necessary. I don't know how the staff manages...
